Electronis Acting Up ?????
I installed a "Priorty Plus" on my C14 today.
When I turn the key switch to the OFF position, the front and rear flashers flash,
tach and speedo swing all the way to the right, and I hear the fuel pump wind up.
It does this 4 times then stops. It is doing what it normally does when you put the
key in the ON position.
The "Priority Plus" is a device that makes the turn signals running lights
and makes the flash for 1.5 seconds when you apply the brakes.
To install this, you have to cut the HOT to the LEFT and RIGHT turn signal
and connect the device between them. You also have to ground the device
and attach its power cable to the BRAKE wire.
I when to the local Kawasaki dealer where I bought the "Priority Plus" and the
lead mechanic was baffled.
Any ideas ????? I don't want to mess up my electronics, especially my fuel
pump or relay.

It sounds like some sort of feed back from the priority unit. It could be that your hookup is feeding current to everything four time (the thing is doing its flashing thing), I would check for reversed wires.

He's 100% right; it's feedback to ignition.
Now, there are a few ways to see where it's coming from, but the 1st thing I'd check, is a shitty ground.
If you haven't, then you should run the ground direct to the battery ground.
If that doesn't work, you'll need a DVOM or a computer safe test light and with that, you'd need to check for voltage on the lines where you are connected; all three. One of them is actually sending voltage out when you turn the key off; could be like I said, due to a shitty or NO ground issue. I'm betting that it's a grounding problem.
If not, and assuming that you connected it according to the wiring instructions (likely), the unit may be either defective, or due to the electronics on this bike, not so cut and dry to interface to this bike.
One thing you could do to fix it if, it's not defective and it turns out to be just an interfacing issue, is to install a relay that cuts power to the brake connection (going to the device), so that there's no voltage present when the bike is off.
If that's what you need to do, I can send you the relay config; it's a simple 4-wire connection that takes only a few minutes to install and it should work. The lights are getting voltage after the engine turns off and that's what's feeding back through ignition. That's coming from the brake line, since it may have voltage on engine off, by design. I'm quite certain of this.

Thanks Guys
Steve, I'll take the relay config.
Sounds like that might do the trick.
I have checked the ground. No problem there.

Here ya go!
On a 5-pin (Bosch style) automotive relay. (available at any automotive supply)
Connect pin numbers as follows:
87a - not used
87 - Brake wire of your Priority plus device (only to the relay now and not the brake wire, where you had it before)
30 - 12 Volts constant (from battery)
85 - Ground (Chassis)
86 - Ignition (from switch, preferably)
This will work and supply power to the brake wire ONLY when the ignition switch is on.

Nope; very little is actually on the CAN bus on the Kawasaki's today, but that will change over the years.

Spoke with Doug. Says the Priority Plus is not
compatible with the C14's electronics.
Thinks the system my be doing some kind of a
voltage check and may not be finding what it needs
due to the circuit in the Priority Plus.
Thanks for all you help.

Rich, try the relay mod; I'll bet it works. His answer was the easy/lazy one. Had he known that before talking to you, they would, or should have published something about the issue. I've done technical support for shit like this for 20 years and we always find a way to make things work. I bet this works!

Funny you should mention that, but this Beta forum (which seriously needs an upgrade -- ) actually uses the screen name from your current login. Just did a drive format on this PC and had to now start putting passwords on all the sites, once again. I just discovered this stupidity about 10 minutes ago -- and changed the login to more appropriately reflect the screen name -- is this one OK with you Sir Ted?

Rich - just do it man! I heard all the chatter and supposition on the e-tard site -- LOL. Those guys'll make a fucking mountain out of a molehill - and then tie a nice neat ribbon around it...damn.
Listen, it's more than likely exactly what I said it was. Install the relay and be done with it, then go tell them e-tards what you did and who told you to do it, just to piss 'em off -- please.
I just don't get it -- the great god's there all agree that you need to do a pile of R&D to do the most simple things, like changing a tire, or putting gas in the bike. In my entire life, I've never seen anything anywhere like that. I wonder of the site is ISO9001...LOL Fucking E-tards...with no life!
Sometimes the simplest things are the most effective, no, actually -- most of the time, yet they make a whole production out of the stupidest little things...

You should be using the switched power right at the ignition switch at the connector just below on the left...but there is power right under the seat, actually more towards the rear. Look for the rear flasher's power line; should not be too difficult to locate. I haven't installed anything that doesn't connect right up at the switch, but the flasher power in the rear should be easy to find. Trace the lines going to the flashers on either the left or right side. I believe you'll find power there. Do you have the tech manual for the C14? It's easily available on the web for free. I have a copy here, but can't mail it to you; too big. The manual would indicate where you'd find the correct feed. When you locate the switched power there, check it to make sure that it does shut off completely with the key off, at the exact same time. Worst case, use the ignition switch feed to test, to make sure it will work as I said.
If Fred H's theory is correct, I have a solution that will work for that too, which just means installing another relay, a DPDT style that would do both the left and right flasher and make the Priority Plus totally transparent to the bike once the key is switched off. It's a simple fix, like this one. What he says, is that when the power shuts down, the serial connection you made in the flashers, isn't closing -- and that would be the Priority Plus doing that, but the workaround for that is just adding another 1 or 2 relays, depending on the relay. Let me know what you find; |'m sure we can get this working. I'm gone as of Sunday to CES until the end of next week, but will check in until then and once I get back as well.

Thanks Steve,
Actually, your relay idea did get me going. I just needed a switchable powersource
that was close to the rear end. I didn't want to take the front fairing apart to get to power.
