Whistler Radar Detector
Wormgear and I installed the Whistler Cruisaider Radar Detectors on our bikes, and after living with the thing for all these months I really am not impressed. The thing falses big time each time you wack the throttle. I haven't fiddled with it because it is too cold to mess with. I am thinking that I want to install a Valentine one in a hidden location and use the remote display. The only thing that I like about it is the helmet mounted indicator and the temp gauge. But it is very hard to see if you have a dark shield on. Oh well a couple hundred more down the tubes.

I already tried the V1 hidden location thing -- but the laser detector doesn't work, because it needs direct line of site. The remote wasn't designed to allow you to hide the V1; just makes it closer to get to when adjusting volume and such...
Since laser needs direct line of site -- you can't hide a portable unit like the V1, but you might want to consider other units (not portable) to remote. If you don't need the unit hidden, the V1 or the Escort 9600i would be my 1st choice. Hidden units would be the Passport SR series, but are mucho $$$$; they will give you the cleanest look though. Bikeland did a writeup on the Helmet display and from what I remember, it got a horrible review,

I am not all that concerned with Laser, where I ride it mostly all radar. And the V1s arrows are ideal. The remote has the arrow on it and the bogie counter. That is all I need. and I can make a transmitter to use the whistler helmet unit work.

Funny thing Ted I was just thinking about asking you how you liked the whistler.
I like mine just fine. The laser did false a lot so I disconnected it, it's already too late with laser anyway. Everything else works just fine for me using the city 2 setting and I can see the display most of the time where it's mounted on mine. My Helmet display works well other than I keep forgetting to turn it off after using it, killing the batteries early.

My 2 cents on radar detectors in general.
When I got my new 350z in 2005 I wanted the best detector I could get. I already had a Cobra (about $120) which worked but i figured I could do better. I got a passport 8500 and mounted it next to the cobra in my car. I drove around for 10 days with both installed and the passport did sense radar a little sooner but also falsed a lot more. Other than that they both worked pretty much identically. I took the 8500 back and paid the restocking fee.

worm, I don't have the laser connected, It just comes on every time I wack the throttle hard. Scaring the shit out of me.
Also your side by side test doesn't work, they interfere with each other and invalidate any testing.

Ted, Mine did that too (laser warning with throttle crack) I disconnected it and selected both laser warnings off in the menu, no problems after that. Is your TC/warning for laser or radar? Yea, that was disturbing thinking you were getting tagged every time you cranked it.
As for the testing interference. I considered that might be an issue though I don't see how receivers interfere with each other and the cobra seemed to work the same way before during and after the side by side.

I read in several radar tests that side by side was problematic to say the least. I also read where Valentine (don't remember his first name) said the hardest thing to filter out is other radar detectors.
I will go look at my settings, I think is says PULSE when it falses when I hit it.

The V1 at least allows you to see the signal strength AND angle it's hitting you at, making it easier to determine whether you have a falsie or a Smokey.

Steve, the helmet display for the whistler is actually (aside from forgetting to turn it off) is the best part, It is just an LED mounted to a flexible stalk that has a small square box attached to it that does nothing more than flashes when the detector goes off and letting you know to look down. You just put the thing in your periphery. Too bad the detector is not working all that well. It would be perfect for the V1 were mounted behind the faring. Making a little transmitter to fire off the helmet display is no big deal.

Ted, I think you should make a HUD for your V1 on the C14. Now that, I'd buy into! I thought you were referring to the helmet display that Bikeland reviewed last year. Whistler was never known to make a great detector. As far as I'm concerned -- Escort, Bell (same) & V1 are the only way to go. I've not used but have heard that the Bell STI Driver is the one to beat these days.

I am working on the HUD, we are looking for an affordable, flexible dot matrix, bright display. I thought they had one at my work, but it was a one off prototype. But as soon as I find some display material, I am on it. Like I said making it work will be a piece of cake. And interfacing the V1 is also a cake walk. And if I do find some display material, I will also make it so that it will transmit the proper freqs to make the Whistler headset work. (They can be bought separately)

I hope so. I could not have lived with that throttle pull falsing either. You know there are two laser inputs. Make sure you have them both selected to off.

I tried it today and turning off the laser stopped all the BS, I thought it was only the rear laser would cause the problems, obviously both are an issue. I need to buy some batteries for the headset now and I think the thing may be just fine.

Well that's good. I called whistler about the laser falsing a while back and ended up sending the rear antenna in for warranty. Got it back a few weeks ago but I've not bothered to put that ticket detector back on. Maybe someday, but I'm betting they didn't fix anything.

I agree by the time you get a real laser warning, that warning means to pull over. I am hoping that the Whistler works out for me, That means no fooling around. I have been running City 2, I may just have to turn on HIGHWAY. Now that I don't get all those false signals.

Yep it's pretty flexible with three or four modes and the ability to turn off any band you don't want, like laser and maybe X band. I hope it works out for you. It has for me.

Ok I am experimenting with the iPhone I just bought and posting from it. I have to admit this is pretty damn cool. So to stay on topic , worm you wouldn't know offhand what battery the headset uses? This thing is checking and correcting the spelling.

CR2450N is the Radio Shack # Eveready may just be 2450. I guess you've changed them before; I had fitment problems the first time and had to enlarge the hole in the board.
Hope your able to read this message as it was composed on a 5 yr. old PC

Hey Ted, After talking about detectors on the other site I got inspired to install the replacement laser antenna and so far, no falsing. We'll see.
And don't nobody bother telling me it's useless even if it works.... I know.
