Stock air filter

ok I took the metal screen off of the stock air filter and the element seems totally secure to me. Is anyone using safety wire or anything it to replace the screen? I don't see how it could possibly be needed but I thought I'd ask. anyone? I'll bet F B knows.

I just did the same thing yesterday (10/1/07). I'm not using any safety wire. It seems sturdy enough. Only time will tell, but I did the same with my 12R without safety wire and they held up for thousands of miles.

I haven't been to my filter yet. Does taking the screen of improve air flow? I was thinking of switching to a K&N to get more air. I guess it all helps.

I know it's just a seat of the pants feeling, but I finally got to take my C14 out for a decent ride tonight, after having removed the screen from the stock air filter. It feels like it pulls a little sooner (like around 4k, instead of 4500k) and it feels like it pulls a little further up the rev range. I acidentally red-lined her tonight because she was still pulling. Normally I would feel her start to slow as she approaches 10k. It was cooler out tonight than it has been all summer, so maybe that contributed also.
