Secondary flys
I'm thinking about removing mine. Any advice? References? Cautions?

Listen, I'm sure it's do-able but, you'd need the map for the PC3, because if the results are anything like the ZX14, you'd stand the risk of burning holes in the pistons. I'd do it, but I haven't seen a map yet and I won't be putting mine on a Dyno to make one either. If you agree to Dyno and share the map, I'll remove my flies and show you how to do it. It's easy to do; my ZX14 was a snap and only took me 30 minutes. Difference was staggering in the low end performance, which is where the C14 spends most of its time anyway. It's the most substantial mod one can make on the ZX14 and I'd think the same would hold true on the C14 as well.

Ok thanks, what I think I'll do is wait till I get the pc3 and aftermarket exhaust (not sure which yet). Then I'll pull the flys, put it on a dyno and have the dyno map it. I'll be glad to share the map. Do you think there's ANY danger in riding it say 20 miles to the dyno without the flys?

Some people have ridden a decent many miles on the 14 with the stock map and no flies. 20 miles should be fine, just try to keep your rpm up to stay out of the lean zone. Over 5,000 should be fine.

Ok good, I was thinking that by the time I get my pc3 and exhaust there might be a richer map available to use for that ride to the dyno.

you can always use a "richer" map than the "zero" map that comes with the pcIII, or just make a richer map to go to the dyno on. if you have a laptop or a puter in the garage, it does not take much time to modify a map. if you are going to the dyno with just a slip on, or full exhaust +3 across the board would surley be rich enough, if not too rich in some areas.

I'm not convinced that this is a "pull the flies" bike. This bike is for touring... not ripping your arms out of their sockets. I like it just the way it is.

I like it just fine the way it is too. This bike needs more power like I need more tax audits. And when it's all done I'll probably be saying what the hell happened to my 42 mpg's and put the flys back. It's my power mad alter ego that possesses me to do these things, kicks my ass every time. As I said before, I just turned 50 but I'm very immature for my age.

Don't listen to fish antlers on this one. I do a decent bit of touring on my 14 and I think pulling the flies makes it better for touring. I don't have to grab 3 gears every time I want to pass somebody on a 2 lane like I did when it was stock. It won't hurt your mileage either, may even help since you'll downshift less.

hang on a minute... I've toured on both the 14 and the C14.... you dont need to "grab 3 gears" to pass someone on the C14... simply not the case.... you have a C14 now?

That would be the highly-tuned race version! Honestly, the C14 has about the widest powerband I've ever encountered. You can almost be in any gear.

Well you might have to grab 3 three gears if you're passing a line of cars in a no passing zone with a school buss full of kids coming at you in the left lane about 100 yards away. Hell, maybe 4 gears since I usually cruise at about 3k.
Anyway, I'm doing it, I just ordered the pc3 and an Area P slip-on and when they go on, the flys come out. I'll make a temporary richer map, ride to the dyno and let the dyno map it. If nothing else, this will be fun. I don't expect it to come together for a couple of weeks but I'll let you know how it works out.

Politely, I beg to differ. I have in the garage now, a 17,000 mile ZX14 and the 500 mile C14, both of which I now own and ride and you need to grab down a few gears. I need to grab gears to pass and it's definitely a bummer in the city to have to wait till she hits like over 6K in 1st to pull out and pass in traffic (just like the ZX14 the 1st day I drove it home from the dealer). Highways are even worse. My flies-out/ sprocketed ZX obviously doesn't have any issue at all. You don't need to downshift to pass, period. How could one even expect a flies-in C14 (that weighs at least 165 lbs more than a piped ZX), to have any balls at low RPM?

Wormgear, Keep us posted. I want the Area P slip on as well but have been holding off pending someone actually finding out if the pc3 was needed. I don't have any dyno shops within an hour of me, so I would have to make a trip to set mine up.

I look at the situation, if I need to pass quickly, I get the thing into the meat of the power band, I don't care how many gears I have to change.

I have to side with FBA here, as much as I'm fairly happy with the low end grunt of the C14, fly removal is a VERY good thing. I rode my ZX14 both ways and there is ABSOLUTELY no comparison. Flies out makes the bike MUCH more rideable and makes for less gear changing when quick power is required. The VVT on the C14 must be responsible for that very flat torque curve but moving it up under 6000 is a no brainer to me.

Yup...and though I haven't yet checked, I'd hope the mod is easy and effective as the ZX. Right now, I just wanna ride it...but soon, I'll look into dem pesky ole flies. :P

I agree that if you want to do some serious passing and you're in 6th, you have to drop two gears to 4th to get any real pull. Otherwise a twist of the wrist is sufficient for just modest passing. I am curious as to what the effect of flies out will have on the C14. I too am waiting to see how you guys make out. I hacked up my 12 in the name of experimentation and I'm not doing it with my C14.

I removed my zx14 secondary flies and now my GTR1400 (concours 14) but have Power Commander fitted with no flies map from PC. With Pipe it runs way harder but no where near the zx14 but hey I didn't want or expect that anyhow.

You guys are convincing me slowly but surely. But how about mileage. That is a big part of the equation.

Chez -- it is the map for a ZX14 or for the C14? I'd think the two are dramatically different due to the engine tune and the VVT. No, it will never pull like a ZX14, but damn, it pulls way harder with the flies out!
Ted, I can't see mileage dropping unless you tear the throttle continuously. It should get slightly more mileage withe flies out...
