Dead C14... I've heard that there reports out there claiming that there is an intermittent issue with the Kipass system, which sometimes does not recognize the transponder, causing the key to stay locked in a no-start position...Damn!

This is the first I've heard of the issue, and being a fist generation machine, if true, doesn't surprise me. I still want to buy the bike, but that would worry the crap out of me.
Good thing there is a 3 year/unlimited mileage warranty!

Makes a nice unverified rumor. I would not place much credence in it without knowing the details, though it certainly sounds plausible. Maybe someone might have said "how horrible it would be if the Ki-Pass fails to register the digital code," and someone else went a little further and it became a rumor. Or, then again, maybe a lot of things. No doubt about it, it would be a real bummer - but if the Ki-pass is taken away during engine operation, the speedometer starts counting the miles from the failure, but it still runs. So, if it ever happened during operation, you would know before shutting the bike off. So, if the speedo did not start counting the miles while the engine was still on, and you shut it off, and then the system did not recognize the code, what happened? Why would the code be corrupted in a power-down situation? EMP, electrical spikes, low battery in Ki-Pass - no way to know until a specific case is tracked down. So I'm counting it as unverified rumor until there's a report or recall.

....whatever happened to the virtues of just using a simple ignition key and disabling a bike manually if you choose to do so?....why do we need that type of device?...3-year warranty or not, it would still suck if you're on an extended trip far away from home with all of your stuff on the bike and you can't start your bike...talk about trip disruption and there's goes your vacation time-off you've saved for the past year
...and for retired folk who don't have a scehdule it would just suck plain and simple...

I'm sure there is a way to start the bike sans KIPASS fob. Systems like this usually have fail-safes built in, it's just a matter of knowing about them.

Uh uh sorry -- most cars today are equipped with the exact same setup; have been for years now and there's NO bypass for it. I know this because, my company builds remote vehicle starters and Can-bus bypass kits for a living; the OEM's don't provide a workaround, since they rarely have issues with the transponder based ignition systems.

Well F@%$
Okay, but I do remember reading that their is a way for Kawasaki techs to override KIPASS, if need be. I wish I remember where I read that, though...?

Yes, by plugging into the diagnostic computer at the shop, but thats a one-time override, not something that can done on the road, for security reasons.

Surprisingly, I still hear arguments from people about computers. "I don't need no stinkin' internet..." and, you just gotta laugh. In business, you learn to embrace change or die.

Well its confirmed now. I rode my three week old c14 to work today no issues.... then came out this evening to go home and nothing.... The transponder wasn't recognized. I got a ride home and got my other transponder. Got back to bike and nothing again. I tried putting transponder on fob....nothing with either transponder. The red light is flashing so there's power but no ignition or startup. This sucks... I called dealer and he is gonna pick it up tomorrow with his trailor. I just had first service Saturday, I rode it the last couple days with no issues. I am not a happy camper right now....

The dealer picked up my Dead C14 from my job today. I called them and they are going through the diagnostic process as we speak. So far no easy fix. Battery, fuses, and electrical all check out fine. They are getting ready to take ignition apart and check the plunger where you push in switch to activate system. I hope they fix it soon.
Rifleman223 If you could get their resolution on that bike let me know....Thanks

Update, C14 fixed. It was the ignition, the "the plunger" was stuck. The shop took apart the ignition and found that it wasn't seated properly, the plunger was stuck and caused the malfunction. They did say that if it ever happened again there is a connector under the ignition and if you disconnect it and reattach it you can trick the ignition system. Soooo after all it technically wasn't the kipass system but was the ignition.

A few have had this happen. If the pin switch sticks while on the road find a medium size "K" rock and rap the ignition switch to get it to pop out. Cheezy I know but it beats being stranded with a dead bike.
