I would say they are at ether ends of the scale.
One is a full on hard core off road race bike with lights...

Also, the Yamaha XT 250X can be another supermoto to compare with.

Rode a 08 690sm and a 06 ninja 650.
The power and torque of the 690 is everywhere.
Makes Me think the 690R would be dynamite in urban or tight twisty riding.
Not much for freeway droning over 30 minutes.
Ride the midrange. But will pull from 2,000 to 7000 rpm.
Have someone make the seat user friendly.
Even KTM's gel seat is too hard for longer runs.

The Versys is more low-mid range than my buds ninja.
Better suspension stock( He has trick track day stuff)
The 650 twin lends itself to more wider use of the rpm range.
Be better for longer rides. More comfortable, more ..., well Versatile.
If you plan to go on longer rides, the Kawi.
If its just for shorter runs and general mayhem the KTM.
Old post but what the hell.

...if only the Versys didn't look so damn aesthetically weird up front ...I like the looks, performance of the '09 SMC, SE, and Duke...I used to ride a 625SXC...the seat stock sucked...the stock seats of the SMC and SE look like they'd suck even harder...I sat on both OUCH ...now the Duke's seat looks doable, but I haven't ridden one for any duration...

I have a ’07 690SMR.

The good:
Front brake is strong with excellent feel.
Bike turns in well and does not mind changing line mid-turn.
Very well made, easy to work on.
Comes with parts book and decent tool kit.
Smoking fun in the twisties.
Loves to lane split.
Comes shod with race tires stock.

The mediocre:
Engine does not like to be ridden below 3K. Above 4K it settles out. Above 5K it is very happy. It is not a tractor motor so rev it.
Fuel capacity will have you looking for fuel around 125 miles.
Freeway riding is OK. It will do it but not its forte.

The bad:
The seat absolutely sucks. I put a Corbin on mine and it’s much better now.
The pipes are ugly.
