cool toy but it makes models not parts, unless a plastic part will function for your purpose.

I really doubt that steam valve they made would last 2 seconds when subjected to steam.
It cannot even function as a plug for casting, asit is not oversized so when the part was cast it would end up undersized and useless.
besides the original part would function as a plug with the same end result.

The scanner by itself would be great for collecting cooordinates for cnc replication, but the plastic model maker is just that a model maker, intended to make a model of a CAD drawn component to see if it actually fits with other components.

The modeler is technology that has no use for the everyday person, even if they have the bankroll to buy it.

I cannot think that Jay Leno has any use for the modeler in his Big Dog Garage. He has use for the scanner to gather data for the cnc work they need on a regular basis.

I dissagree Ozzy. Leno has all those oddball old cars whose parts are no longer available- and once he realizes he needs something he can model it up, see if it fits, fine tune it, then have a machine shop fab it up.

Remember, until the 50's only the Fords had universal parts: ie, each part was made for each individual car, and taking parts off another car rarely meant they would work on your car. That is where this thing would shine, you could manipulate the program until you had the perfect fit for YOUR car, THEN have the real deal fab'ed up.

Like you said, though: "The modeler is technology that has no use for the everyday person".

ozzy. you do realize that you can transfer the data file to a cnc machine and manufacture the part out of metal? I believe the plastic machine is used to generate blanks for testing as well as casting.

....isn't the purpose of the modeler just a faster way to cast cheaper plastic parts to verify fit and interface viability of more expensive material before they cast or carve the more expensive material only out find out that it doesn't quite fit the way they thought it would which would result in the the scrapping of the expensive material?...it thats the case, then of course this is a time and material saving tool to have for those who could us such a device...

Old geezers hate being told they are useless ...

But that would be cruel and disrespectful ....I would never think that of Ozzy ....

Yes; if you watch the whole video you can see the plastic part is made as a blank..a machinist can work the part out of metal after that...with much more ease ....thats the idea.........I imagine in certain applications plastic might work...not sure...

Jay has a number of exoctic (old) rare cars like the steam car ,Jaguars and others....so it suits his needs perfectly I am sure of that....to him it's another usefull affordable toy to add to his collection of stuff....

lucky guy....

If you already have a part and want to duplicate it, then you can scan it and send it to a cnc machine.

What is the point of making a plastic copy of a part you already have ? You got the part, scan it, machine it.

The plastic replicator is designed to make prototype parts to check for fit and design issues. it is not intended to do what they presented on the show. They were just showing it off.

Even though I am an uneducated old geezer, but chances are I have ran more machine tools in my lifetime than most all of you young whippersnappers combined :GRIN

CAD? For the last 3months of 80 -300 manhour weeks I have had from 2 to 5 CAD guys working on the 2d and 3d Navis model of the hotel I have to get built before Christmas.

Ever wonder how the CAD guys get all those numbers to build the model ? Those numbers are all provided by old goats like myself telling the young wonder whizzes..

They enter it into the program, and presto a model is made.

The cool thing is you can see where your piping, the fire piping, the hvac, the structure, and the lighting are and where things need to be massaged due to the overpaid highly educated engineer thinking it should fit, like trying to put a 56 in tall hvac duct into a ceiling cavity that is only 30 inches deep.

Superintendant I assume Ozzy. My brother is one for GLY in Seattle. I found your problem:

"like trying to put a 56 in tall hvac duct into a ceiling cavity that is only 30 inches deep."
Turn it sideways. Some sage advice from a veteran aircraft mechanic. hahaha

70 inch wide duct

I'm the super for the mechanical contractor- ie. plumbing, hvac, and chilled systems.

Told the General today it was an easy fix, just pour the columns for the next 3 floors a foot higher and the clearance problems on those floors goes away!
