West Florida Area Riders FYI Beware

Jan 6 (from http://blogs.tampabay.com/breakingnews/2009/01/troopers-to-ins.html)

The Florida Highway Patrol announced today that it will conduct random driver's license and vehicle inspection checks throughout Pasco and Hillsborough counties this month.

Troopers will look for bad brakes, worn tires, defective lights and other vehicle problems that pose a danger to drivers, authorities said. They'll also seek out drivers who are breaking state license laws.

The FHP chooses different counties and areas to conduct inspections, depending on how heavy or light trooper staffing is during a particular period of time. Troopers typically find a safe place on a certain road, FHP spokesman Sgt. Steve Gaskins said, and they flag down drivers during daylight hours.

"We don't have an annual vehicle inspection like other states do, so this is a way to make sure people are driving safe vehicles," Gaskins said.

The annual vehicle inspections ended under Florida Gov. Bob Graham in 1981.

Inspection checkpoints will take place on the following Pasco roads: U.S. 41 and 301, State Roads 54 and 52, various county roads, Key Lime Drive, Hudson Avenue, Shady Hills Road, Pasco/Hernando County Line Road, Hillsborough/Pasco County Line Road, Thys Road, Hays Road, Hicks Road, Lock Street, Moog Road, Mile Stretch Drive, Jasmine Boulevard, Madison Street, Old Dixie Highway, Moon Lake Road, Denton Avenue, Old Pasco Road, Foam Flower Boulevard, Dayflower Boulevard, Quail Hollow Boulevard, Boyette Road and Monteverde Drive.

And they will be on these Hillsborough roads: U.S. 92, 41, business 41 and 301; State Roads 582, 597, 678, 580, 45, 600, 60, 573, 599, 676, Alt 676, 39, 674, 43, 601, 583 and 685; County Roads 587, 576, 579, 581, 672, 640, 574, 574A, 39B, 582A and 584; and these local roads: South Mobley Highway, Lutz Lake Fern Road, Wilsky Avenue, Linebaugh Avenue, Van Dyke Road, Barry Road, Livingston Avenue, Crenshaw Lake Road, 127th Avenue, Skipper Road, County Line Road, Davis Road, Trapnell Road, Jap Tucker Road, Lithia Pinecrest Road, Williams Road, Harney Road, Symmes Road, Balm Road, Magnolia Lane, North Taylor Road, Pruett Road, Rhodine Road, McIntosh Road, Turkey Creek Road and Balm Riverview Road.

if they did that in san diego, there would be a lot of cars going up for auction and the drivers trying to find out how to get back over here.

Back in the early 70's the Costa Mesa, CA. police used to do this on a regular basis right next to Orange Coast College. Preying on kids with little money trying to improve themselves.

FL came out with a strict law that an illegal tag mount is over $1000 bucks now is mainly why I wanted to FYI. An officer told me they would be looking at this specifically.

Example of this law is tag has to be lit to the point it is visable 50 feet and be seen from both sides of the bike and on and on and on

Correct! Many other states are finding out similar ways to get revenue from us too.

+1

If no one broke the law all local, county, and most state governments would go broke. Obviously they won't let that happen. As we get use to (and stop violating) the exsisting laws they will keep creating new "laws" to get our money. Pretty soon we won't be able to leave the house without paying a fine.

it doesn't take a mechanic to tell if tires are worn, lights are messed up, registration is out, or you're running some sort of equipment that is considered to be "less than legal".

That's up to the officers discretion and if he or she is having a bad day , we pay in fines and eventually higher premium- which somehow seem to spread out to all zx owners in time.

Time is valuable for most. I would be very irritated if I had to stop for that crap! Especially since I'm proactive with maintenance on my vehicles. I could justify this if I was pulled over for a violation(speeding, running stop sign, etc....).

How is a state trooper going to inspect brakes on a car without removing the wheels? Mechanics have to be certified to determine if vehicle systems are out of spec, dont they? Are these cops going to get certified? And what about all the real crime that is occuring when they are looking for broken tail lights? This is not about saftey or they would reinstate vehicle inspections at the time of registration.

I call BS on this whole thing. These "inspections" are a pretext to make mass traffic stops. Do you think those roads mentioned where choosen by chance? I don't know the area but I am willing to bet they are not in affluent areas. This is merely big brother throwing a large net to jack money from whoever they can.

Give them an inch and they'll take a mile. We have allowed this tyranny for to long, we elect and vote for or chose these officials then gripe when were singled out.

Many others~! I thought FL wrote the book, but NY has somne CRAZY hitler style motorcycle laws being proposed. And as they crave money, the laws will hit the books and the socialistic police will have a field day.

Its tough out here, I can honestly see why so many of my friends do track days only and stopped riding on the streets

most police, in FL, won't chase you so what are they saying with this new law (50 over = $1000)? Don't let us catch you!

Who is the cop to say what is worn enough or not? And the brakes too?? Come on!
Are you a cop? Why do you seem all for it? How does this prevent crime? The whole scenario is ignorant.

I like this post:
