sorry guys
I feel sorry for the R1 guys this year. I as well as everyone was excited to see the new designs for 09. They took the best looking bike and turned it into a design disaster. They screwed the kawasaki 08 by putting a buglike front end on a bike that looks awesome from the side. They did the same thing to the R1 this year. I bet the bike will be fast and torquey and fun to ride but why not keep it looking the best. Even the suzuki with its cruiser style exhaust. the design teams need a slap. The 08 kawasaki is terrific fun to ride, scary power after 8000 so how come it does not sell as well? No one can get by the bug like front that ruins the bikes appeal. The r1 looks like it has the Jokers smile with cross eyes. I was going to wait to see what the new 09's would look like before deciding to buy a bike. Glad I did not wait. I bought an 08 zx10r black and I am getting used to it. If I dont look at the front I am good. Its like having a girlfriend with a hot body but she has a big nose. After a bit you forget about the nose. I check all the time on this website to see if anyone is talking about the new bikes but I see its mostly about other bikes and not R1s. I cant wait to hear how it handles though, hope it is a beast this year. Makes the other makes more competitive in the following years. Some of the people who photoshop previews for fun do better designs than the people paid to do it. They should have checked those out first. BMW got it right. Good luck, congrats on yamahas Moto GP world championship.

I agree, I'm not impressed with the 2009 either. I don't care about looks though, and regarding raw HP I'm more of a handling braking cornering person as priorities. Bottom line for me: Yami rolled out a heavier R1 for 2009.
Then yesterday I get the new Cycle World mag, and they clearly say the power was not increased for the new engineering design, it was spread out throughout the powerband better than the '07 and 08 and that Yamaha stated to them their emphasis is on "controllability"
I usually only keep a bike a year or so, but my old '08 will stay in the garage, although I might add a new bike to the stable.
In 2008, Kawasaki and Honda both drastically made changes that improved their bikes over past year's models. I'm surprised Yami rolled out a heavier R1 bike with no increase in regards to their HP #'s for '09.

I don't care for how it looks from the front either...but handling and power are far more important.
It doesn't seem Mr. Spies has any problems with the 2009 R1 (I know, not quite the same):
