I figured the new crankshaft was going to be awesome ...but ....this detailed explanation shows it to be really awesome....
lets see some real world results to send the jury home....it sure sounds good !!...the theory and engineering is sound....lets see just how good are the actual results now....

interesting considering we are talking about I4's only.
I would like to know if it actaully produces more torque or produces more useable torque ?

Cool,
Kaz,
The design theory is to produce more useable, tractable, linear torque delivery.

engine sounded pretty cool in person... makes a weird, jet engine/helicopter engine type noise....

Fish, did they change the firing order of the cylinders?
do they fire 90, or 270 degree's apart, instead of typical 180 degree's?
Does it sound like 2 ducati's running at once?

Thats what I have been debating on....? unless the combustion torque is freed to produce more torque than with the previous combined torque from the crankshaft inertia ..it will be only more linear and tractable through out but will lose overall (total) torque....
not sure that is the case....before the crankcase inertia fluctuated .... to what degree it hampered or opposed combustion torque is not scientifically clear to me..not in numbers anyways...it is only explained in theory characteristics....
For circuit racing good no doubt...for drag racing just not entirely sure....but if the combustion torque reaches higher numbers in the new crankshaft design and the constant inertial torque of the crankshaft combine positively with it to create a higher total torque then no problem...then its more of a change in torque delivery than a reduction in torque between the two designs...... it is an interesting change no doubt... ____________

I doubt they would have given up any out right accelleration these days for traction...
Considering the 08 R1 was down on power compared to all class competitors already, they could not afford leave even more on the table ....
Thats my opinion in my simple mind anyway..........

drag racing? for every one litre bike on a drag strip in this world, there's about 20,000 on a knee-drag race track. Does anyone believe Yamaha engineers (or other makers) target the drag race application? :P

Realistically, 99% of the riders can go faster on a 600 on a roadcourse. An R1 is a poseur's wet dream. But hey, we all have our dreams.

+1 The R6 was such the best track weapon for '08, it was obvious there was no need to change it.
R1 was behind the jap litre bikes stock for stock and yamaha was due to improve it
