My friend Barry from Texas just got a red one. He's totally enamored with it, the bike is a sexy beast. Wish I was closer so I could ride it. And he traded two bikes in on it and the thing was 20K.

Grab on to your wallet!

I've got an 1198s as of last Sunday and have had the ZX14 since July '06.

As soon as I got it the weather went for $hit. I've had 2 rides on it besides the trip home from the dealer. Red, B-F- new, right out of the crate, not a single soul but me got to sit on it.

If you've ever been on a BMW boxer, the Duc shakes like the brand B until about 26-2800 rpms and then it sorts itself out and runs smooth as silk. The 14 feels like a sewing machine by comparison. But... that sound.

The dry clutch has been more difficult for me to modulate. No stalls, but it seems to slip and then grab suddenly while you're taking off. She shifts smoothly, and thanks to some idiot brain dead cagers I know that she moves out quite sharply when needed. It's obviously not plush like a ZX14, but it has a very alluring character and feel. it's light, moves quickly really feels good under you.

So far, I'm very happy with mine.

I'm heading out to the dealer on Friday to look at a black 1198s. I have a red one on order but can get the black much sooner, obviously a potential customer has backed out of a bike so may try and screw them down a bit.

What's the rwhp #'s on the 1198? I thought I saw that it was around 155ish. Guy I work with bought one, said he "might put a pc on to get 200hp"...I just walked away! lol

170 at the crank, so prob 155 at the wheel sounds right, put on a pc and the termis and that should go up to 165ish. Have seen a 1198S being run in on the Dyno in Australia put out 172 - 174 RWHP after the run in. (customers race bike)

picked the bike up on Friday lunch-time, still to early to tell the difference between this (1198S) and the 1098S. Initial start up is slighty different, you now have to hold the button in until it fires, as opposed to push it once and walk away while it does it's thing. I can confirm that the DTC works. Crappy roundabouts over here covered in muck, the 1098S always used to spin, so I tried feeding in more than required power on the 1198s and low and behold the dash lit up like a Xmas tree and the power slide was stopped before it got started. I think the DTC is going to affect wheelies and general squidliness that I sometimes like to do, but I'll have to wait and see.

Will post some pics when I get a chance, and keep you updated as things happen

P.S. I have pre-paid for a set of Termi's for the first service, just to piss of the wanker of a nieghbour who's kid get's smart to me as I come in from work, little shits gonna have trouble sleeping every now and then.

Just the slip ons, incl. labour its about 1650 EUR I got them for a grand, I'd hate to think what the full system costs.

On a side note, have 660 kms on the bike so far so not long now till the first service, which we have to pay for , tight cnuts won't do the free servicing like what you get in the states

binned it. that's right, I'm just back from dropping of my three week old 1198s at the dealers for some LHS cosmetic repairs. Long story short, was having a great time at the track, knee down, scrapped the gear shift and rear brake pedal loads of times. every thing going great, traction control working like a dream, I was on the last corner before the pit lane entry and lost the front end. alot of gravel rash on the left hand side, the tank is scratched up but not dented, tail cowl destroyed. levers, clip on and the usual stuff. I am fine not a scratch on me, the new leathers had a baptisim of fire and came out in pretty good nick...considering it was about a 50 - 60mph low side. about 3000 grands worth of damage or more if I go through the insurence and claim my leathers.

1 quick question.

I, and several other people were checking out the new arai helmet afterwards, and there is not a mark on it. I mean not a scuff, scratch blemish, no stone chipping, nothing. would you replace the helmet or keep using it. I am about 95 percent sure that my arm bore the initial brunt of the off and the my head never came into contact with the track/grass/gravel trap....

thoughts

Cheers

I would just keep the helmet. But if you can claim it through the insurance company with the leathers thats something to consider. Your only paying a deductible so not bad to have an extra helmet through your misfortune. Im sorry to hear about your crash. I would be so upset if I had one of those and it touched the floor. But hey at least your using it for what it was meant for. They are just so expensive. I bet most people don't even see the track with that bike. Send us some pics of that beauty when you get the chance.

man, Arai will inspect the helmet for you. CHEAP. Your noggin is necessary for you to ride. Spend a few pennies to have Arai inspect the helmet and be SURE it's good. IF it took an impact but didn't get scuffed, you could have zero protection in a subsequent get off. That's not worth chancing.

We're talking about a top of the line superbike here, not some bargain bike you got 2nd hand. If you're spending the kind of money to make the 1198s right, do it right and make sure the helmet is good.

FWIW, I had an RX7 Arai previously and it most assuredly saved my noggin from what would've been a face plant at about 30mph. It's remarkably intact, but I retired it immediately. Arai makes a fantastic lid.

Smurf,

Thanks for the advice, I will drop it back to the shop and they can get the ARAI guys to take a look at it, didn't know that was an option.

Drew,

I have a few before and after pics but am unable to load them on here due to company blocking all things fun. I can e-mail you some if you can post them up.
