WHY WOULD i WANT AN 848?
Well? What's the justification? Why shrink and repackage the 1098's engine?

So You can compete directly with the greatest all around bike on the planet brotha......the GSXR 750
In all sincerity, for the coin and the fact it is not an S or R model, I would just go with big brother and be done with it. Doesnt make a lot of direct sense with it.....unless they are just trying to get people on something and it is a lower price point obviously.

Lower prices sell, especially with possible financial tightening for a lot of the country coming up; gas prices, housing market, banking, the falling dollar, etc...
Some people still need to get their Ducati on.

A lot of cash for not having all the goodies. For the money you can buy and build a far nicer gsxr 750

seems the 848 will have some major handling/stopping/corner speed advantages?

Oh sheeesh, I was just messing with ya....lol. Best all around bike on the planet in my opinion. I have had them since day 1 and I am also a Ducati fan as well. When I look at my built 750 race bike and the 848 side by side, for the money would take the Suzuki if you want the best bang for the buck because you get so much more......however, when I throw a leg over either one of my 1098 s models, I have to say they are the most enjoyable bikes I have ridden....maybe not better....but more enjoyable. Maintenance, parts availability, things like that it is tough to beat the Suzuki and the things are rock solid. The sad thing about the 848 is that it is that much cash and there is not even an S model.....for me, I would just bump up to the big brother S and have all the goodies. I guess it depends on how you look at things.

I have the 1098S and honestly, if I had the space would probably have a few more bikes, I was a pillion once on a GSXR750, I had never seen 180 KPH come up so quickly in all my life (jap speedo's stop at 180 in New Zealand). Same feeling I got when the new shape ZX9 arrived (95 I think).
I'm not knocking the Zukie, but you've gotta admit, the Ducati it two wheeled pornography.

DUcati's are great, I own them so I can't hammer them nor would I. I am saying for the money, You can build a nice bike or nicer. Ihave a very nice GSXR 750 that cost me a little more then an 848 would cost and has far more goods on it and I would say is faster too. I have a GSXR 1000 that is as nice as you could ever hope to be and it was less then the Ducati's I have. Now we can argue differences and that is fair but different may not mean better here. My 1000 hauls ass, handles better then the 1098 S's a etc. I like them all for various reasons. Nothing but love for both Ducati and Suzuki from me.

The 848 is sorta close in displacement and price to the current 1098, but when the 1098 is replaced with the bigger and pricier 1198 then the 848 will fill the hole under it better. I think they should've waited to release it with the common 1198(not the current 1098R).
And Ducatis have never been about value or bang for your buck. You can drop a 427 into an outhouse and smoke a Ferrari, but at the end of the day it's still just an outhouse.

It is, but so is engine sound, character, style, etc... considerations vary from rider to rider.
For me it used to be performance 1st, but now I have a daughter I can't go to the track anymore($$$) and getting the most out of these on the street is too dangerous. Then there's the realistic point that none of us here will get 100% out of their bikes anyways, so extra performance doesn't always equal quicker lap times.
A Britbike mag did a test with a novice rider(a few trackdays experience) at the track with 4 different bikes. A CBR125, CBR600, stock CBR1000, and a 190HP British Superbike CBR1000. He was fastest on the stock 1000, close 2nd on the 600, then the 190HP B.S.B. 1000, then 125(sheer gutless).

All I know is that I have a slightly built 2000 zx-12r and a 2007 1098. The zx-12 sits and gathers dust while the 1098 is out almost every ridable day.
That is the bottom line .
Anyone interested in a 2000 zx-12r?

To answer the initial question of "Why would I want an 848"?
Well, it's now the fastest selling Ducati model, EVER! And at a time when the economy is crap. That says a lot, I still wish I could get one.
