WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!
I just got home from picking my nice new red 1098 up!!!!!! What a machine! Its certainly more "buzzy" than my old zx-12... but SOOO Much nicer in the corners!!! Seems quick as hell too, but I've been babying the engine during breakin. Doug Meyer came out to say hello again - great to see him at the dealer again!! We have a few pix of me taking the bike away (Doug is in one ). I'll get the pix from the dealer and post them as soon as I can. Finally, a picture of me and one of my bikes on the website... its only been what... 7 years?? lol.
I'm a bit concerned, the dealer told me to just keep the RPM's below 7,000 for the first 200 miles, constantly vary the engine gears/RPM for the first 600 miles, and do a few quick bursts above 7,000 RPM from 200 to 600 miles - at which point the engine is "broken in".
This is a bit different from the owners manual (I didn't read it until I got home tonight). The owners manual suggests keeping the RPM's below 5,500 to 6,000 for the first 1000km (a tad over 621 miles) then from 1000km to 2500km (about 1553 miles) to be more agressive - but to never exceed 7K RPMS. I definately had the engine to just below 7,000 RPM a few times on this trip - hope the baby is ok. Anyone care to chime in on this? Should I follow the dealers suggestion?

Tough call ... congrats on the bike! You're going to love it... buzzy or not, the 12 (and the 14 for that matter) is a slug compared to this bike

How did you break the bike in Fish? I'm hoping I didn't cause any damage to the engine... didn't really take her much about 6500 too often though - or for too long (just quick bursts).

Oh - almost forgot... the dealer also suggested varying RPM's and/or gears often for the first 200 miles. Don't know if that came through in my first post. I definately did this (took her home through the mountains). DId a lot of varying. a few wide open throttle runs but mostly just throttle movements to keep RPM's varied.

well.. I'm following the book for the most part, mainly because it appears as though (unlike the KMC book that just came with the 6R) Ducati actually worked out a procedure... I figure that she should be pretty good to go at about 600 miles though... right now not going above 7K rpm... I'm at about 400 miles total.
If you just ride the thing and shift naturally you'll probably find you gravitate to around 6-7K rpm anyways... I wouldn't run it up to redline just yet.... let the poor thing break in... it's a finely tuned instrument...
remember... you're not drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon anymore!

lol! Thank Fish . I didn't take her above 7K yet - just worried that I blipped her up to 7K several times. GRRR.. I wish the dealer told me the correct break in procedure. You are correct though - the motor seems most happy around 4K to 6K RPM's. Also, in top gear, it does not like to get wide throttle below 3500K .

An extremely technical break-in procedure is required. here is my advice:
Just go ride the damn thing.

No way a stock 600 will kill this bike in its stock form. Nuff said.

not a chance... rode the 6 today... it might as well not be running compared to the 1098.

Break-in is always a mystery to all...
Tell me how we should break-in a bike that comes from the factory with full synthetic oil as a break-in oil?
Those a ready to go out of the crate.
Just do 3 heat cycles and be done with it.
-->Ride it to operating temperature, park it,wait till the temp gauge reads low...3 times.
Now since its a new toy for all, that could translate to somewhat long rides and end up being a 600 miles service point anyways
Make sure to do the 3 heat cycles and all will be fine...I did that on my 99 R1 and its showing 256 000 miles...only need new rings now (rest is original save for the clutch pack).

Another ZX14 vs 1098 argument?
That's pretty apples to oranges right there. Like saying a Top Fuel Dragbike will outaccelerate an RC211V, while the RC would walk away on a road course; response is:
"OK? And?"

What I want to know is how does the 1098 compare to the ZX-10R in acceleration and handling.

Handlingwise the 1098 outperforms the 10R. Braking, no comparison. Weight and acceleration the 1098 stuffs the 10R. The 10R prolly has a higher ultimate top speed, but the 1098 blows its doors off in every other aspect.
Currently I own both of these machines.
