OK Initial impression 1098S
For the true meat eaters out there ( are there any?) Caught a lovely bit of dry pavement and 60 degrees this afternoon after work. Got the S out for it's first 65 miles. My baseline is my old R1, with Circuit 1 suspension and lots of motor upgrades. It's still a fine looking FAST ride, and is capable of going quicker than the street skill sets I've encountered.
The 1098 is new and very tight of course, so certain things will change with mileage. The seat is BRUTAL ( hah!, who cares? my Guzzi LeMans was worse and I put 45K on it). I haven't had time to set the sag yet, so this is stock settings, low speeds ( 6K in 6th is 108mph, might be geared a tad tall for the road) The bar tac isn't bad to read, the speed indicator is easy to see also.
Lot'so vibration below 4800rpm. Mirrors and fairing buzz, but after 4800, it's butta.....Again, I have yet to fiddle with the suspension, but it flicks VERY quickly, and feels incredibly light. The brakes are the best I've sampled. They are very linear and progressive and will not suffer the ham fisted, but an easy 2 finger squeeze brings a quick stop accompanied by a neat "ZZZzzzzzzzzzzz" as you slow.
The riding position itself is more upright than my R1. I'll probably get some aftermaket rearsets to put the pegs a little back and up where I prefer them.
The "EXUP" potmetal cover looks like an after thought on a $20K bike. I'm sure the aftermarket will supply a nice Ti bit soon enough. Otherwise, this bike stops people in it's tracks with it's good looks. I guess I'm secure enough to say I enjoy that. It's beautiful.........
It feels like ( and I've barely lit the wick) this will be one FAST, composed ride. I can't wait to let it off the leash at about 1200 miles or so. That's it. It impresses me, and really, I'm not that easily impressed.

Another thing......... make sure the dealer puts the full charge on the battery. The 1098's have a built in " disabler " function that has a bright red dash light that continuosly flashes when not running. It appears that at some point of current loss the light feature is diabled, at least it' no longer flashes, but the bike just has enough juice to fire and run. I'm picking up a battery tender tomorrow.
How ironic. My poor old R1 still has the origional battery which has never gone flat even after long stretches in the winter months without running and without ever needing a tender...........ahhhhh technology.
It was cooler and trying to rain when I got home from work, but the pavement was dry, so I rode the 6 miles into town to top off the tank........78 miles so far. It did feel slightly looser tonight, but I also realize now that even tight, it prefers to be spinning above 4500.
Still............... having a beer, listening to music and checking over the fasteners is not an entirely bad way to spend part of an evening.......Ciao

Guess I'll talk to myself more,eh? Had a Beautiful day in western Oregon today. It got up to 64 degrees with dry roads. After taking care of some business this morning I met Dr. Velocity on his Tuono and Joe with his Gixxer and we managed 170 miles of fun. No chicken strips whatsoever ( on the rear) on the 1098. The engine gets smoother by the mile, but the base settings with the Ohlins is pretty close to perfect for aggessive street pace riding........... It is so ridiculously light feeling and precise, amazing. Matter of fact, on the Duc I have yet to make a mid corner correction, the chasis is THAT good. Look, lean, throttle, carve. All very nice. Haven't spun it past 6200 rpms or so, but it carries a lot of pace, even down low. It seems like it will have plenty of steam once 7-10, 000 can be accessed.
One minor glitch. Check the Pedal linkage for the gearshift. Mine was screwed up enough that it started contacting the lower fairing on downshifts, so I had to take some time to readjust it with the help of Joe's toolkit, since the Duc comes with a pot metal sparkplug extension and a cheesy screwdriver. What does a guy expect for $20K anyways, right? Oh yeah, other than a wallet holder, the tailpiece "trunk" is practically worthless. Who cares?? It DOES get an almost embarassing amount of attention at stops. An older couple that are not motorbike enthusiasts asked to take pictures at a coffee stop. Cool huh?

Looking forward to it Doug. I'm getting a radar mount from radarroy so I can mount my 8500 and hard wire it in. He has a specialty mount that grabs the exposed fork on top of the triple tree. In case you're looking for one, I measured the OD, and the Ohlins is 53mm ( I would assume the same for the Showa tubes.
The guys I mentioned above also race on our endurance team and are very quick. Joe's backgound was flattrack, so he REALLY dug the wheelymonster 2ono as well.
I think the next time I go that I'll try a back to back with the old R1.........I'm curious to see if it's going to feel like a truck now comparatively. Anyways, more later.

Blah blah yada yada......... the battery thing seems OK. You scroll to the Batt function and it shows 12.4V, so evidently the red light only stays on for a while, not long enough to flatten the battery on it's own. When warm, if you turn the key and hit the ignition button before it has scrolled thru the SBK 1098S TES there is an ignition lag. Wait for the scroll.
Also, engine braking, curious? Not going real quick yet, but pouring into a 35 mph in 6th at around 6K you can quick blip 2 downshifts with no hint of year problems. I suppose it depends on your riding style, but the little SS SV650 Dr. Velocity provides for endurance has no slipper clutch and we get in to T1 and T7 as well as the boys with $$$ slipper's in their play racers. I think between the high gearing and general motor charcteristics unless a guy gets seriously stupid on entry, shouldn't be a problem. Of course a track day will tell, but I doubt I'd notice the difference........ Takes a while to figure a new date out, eh?

No. I'm not a rich bastad. If you doubt my postings it would be fine to meet you if you are west coast. I don't boast,. The guys here that are interested on an informed, experienced opinion will listen.
Maybe at the next OMRRA practice I'll rent a camera. I'm sure that will help you go quicker, eh? Busa guy..... like to pin the throttle on the straight? BFD Different worlds entirely. I guess the problem with any site is the jackass response you can expect from a few. Go to the straightline stuff and beat your chest there, Sorry, if I take your response wrong I appologize, otherwise it stands as is.

Thank's Doug, that WAS just my way of asking for some actual pictures and hopefully with Ore backdrops.
I'll list my current rides, then you can rip me a new A-hole for being a 'busa' guy:
68 Yam 175 2-stroke
99 Copper Busa
99 Duc 900 SS full fairing
00 MV Agusta F4S
02 Aprilia RSV
02 ZX 12r CTB
03 KTM 950 Adv
04 R1
05 LE Busa
07 ZX 14
Plus, my closest 1 duc dealer is about 150 miles and then about 200 miles to 4? Unless I am very lucky, I can't just walk in and buy one,
I am not in sportbike country, I usually have to order my bikes.

Again, I appologize. No problem, a guy with a Mille and F4 likes lean angle, no doubt. I'll be glad to get some pics up if you guys help. I really have little apptitude on a compu, and I'm not excited about computers in general.
Of course we are getting at least a week of typical Oregon weather for now, Rainy, blowey, dark and damp.. That's why it's so green and beautiful later. You guys would LOVE where I live.........we've got a little farm at the base of the largest peak in the coast range, one neighbor with 15 acres, the other with 43, and we back up into Starker forrest. Big tall firs and xmas trees on the flats............NO people. When it's sunny again I'll take some shots of the road heading up the mtn.
It's funny tho, despite these roads, there are WAY more cruiser types that go by than sportbikes. Not a hotbed here either despite the roads.

For those who are interested in low profile exploits Radarbusters has a mount that works for the 1098S. It's their specialty mount # 70053 ( 53mm) that attaches to the top of the fork, either right or left. Along with another hardwire kit for my 8500 X50, I'll be able to swap back and forth with the R1......... It's not the total answer, obviously you can't be a total idiot and think that a good detector will solve all situations, but these devices have saved me more times than I can recall. Mount's about $75, hardwire kit $25........

Whenever I'm riding through 'green' areas, I love it, but I know how it got green.
Same with nice, cool mountains.
For pictures, there are stickys on the forums on how to post them,
Here is an easy one:

One way to see how I posted the pictures is to hit the QUOTE button under my post with the MV picture.
You'll see something that goes
Your picture should have a htt p:// XXXXX .jpg address, You will add the [img] and [ /img] around it with no spaces.
Under your photobucket pictures, you'll see a box that says IMG Code?
Left click it once with your mouse, a "copied" with pop up.
Just come back here and right click your mouse and PASTE it your dialog box.
That is all there is to it with photobucket.

That's funny wormhole. The real BEAUTY about the MV's, Aprilia's, and Ducs is seen from behind the bars when they are in motion. There's an intangible " character" thing that is part of the ride, along with the handling, engine vibes and noises etc. What I DO know about the 1098 is that it really arcs beautifully through a given corner or set of corners , and that's where you see that the engineers that designed it are brilliant. Light, quick, smooth and precise. It's the old addage : if you're a good rider, this bike will make you a better rider, etc. I've let my 2 endurance racing buddies throw a leg over and go through some twisty bits, we were all raving...... magic. VERY easy and inviting to ride. That's the beauty IMO. Crap weather here for a little. Dave and I are going to set the sag this wknd ( I'll let you guys know where it's at for my weight at least), and I'm going to solder in the connection for the hardwire on my 8500 and put the mount on. As I mentioned earlier, even on breakin with stock gearing, it doesn't really smooth out or feel happy until between 4800-6000 which keeps you whistling down the road between 85-110 in 6th. Nothing wrong with that on my roads, but running a good detector ( and using some commen sense) is a must.

Well, That IS a good option. Wait until a Starbucks hero blows big $$$$$$ bolting on every trick billet piece and doing every upgrade that comes along, then gets bored....... and buy it cheap ( relatively). I really started out looking for a Starbucks special 998R. THAT was my origional goal. They are beautiful in my eyes. But they are around 35lbs and 30rwhp shy of what the 1098 specs were spouting.......hmmmmm...... don't think I could forgive myself. I still desire MOTOR with my lean angle, end of arguement ( within my mind) I will say that generally I have shyed away from buying the first year model of ANY new model release..... seems like there are usually warranty issues ( remember broken cush drives on the 98' R1?) etc....... Still, this was the year for a new litrebike, and for me, the 1098 was too appealing NOT to try. We'll see,eh?
