Chosing a Ducati

I'd appreciate a little advice about choosing a Ducati. I recently decided to get a second bike. I live in southwestern New Mexico where there's and excellent mix of roads to ride. My current bike is a new ZX10 and having low-sided into a guard rail a couple of weeks ago I'll be spending some time making it ridable and presentable again. Since it obviously has much more hp than it needs [or that I can use apparently] the ability to do a 9 second quarter not my prime consideration for a ride in the mountains. I've always had a thing for Ducati's aesthetically but I admit having been lured by low maintenence req. and the crazy pull of a Japanese liter bike when one bike was all I could afford. I see plenty of used Ducs for sale in the 5-8k range and many are 748s. Is there a whole lot of difference, say between a 748 and a 916 or a 998 for that matter? After my accident I'm going to be extra careful not to launch myself over a cliff [I hope] but plan to improve upon my technical skills. Like I said I don't expect eyeball flattening acceleration but dont want to be disappointed with the midrange pull when I want it. I'm not sure if the very pretty and typically less expensive 748 is going to be enough. I'm hoping someone whos ridden them all can help steer me in the right direction. Im 6 ft tall and weigh 180, Thanks.

Sounds like as a result of your wreck horsepower is not your priority
