Survey's mean nothing when it comes to reliability and maintenance!!! I know 4 BMW car owners off the top of my head, that do nothing but send there various model year cars into the shop and get them out. EVERY ONE of them has multiple visits a year to get stupid stuff fixed on there brand new 540i on down to there late 90's M5. BUT they all claim to love there BMW cars more than any other vehicle. Honda owners, too, are same kind of people - If it doesn't say CBR (or V-TEC! lmao) they look down there noses at it.
Don't mistake BRAND LOYALTY for QUALITY! God, do I have to mention Harley Davidson's? Jaguar's? Alpha Romeo's? ---------------------- EDSEL?! Remember that saying from the baby boomer gen "Looks like you bought yourself an Edsel!" followed by a shaking of the head in sympathy? But the still have a faithfull following, with guys like my 55 yr old boss who just chimed in with "hey, Edsels got a bad rap. Those were some great cars". ~~~ Yes, he owns a BMW, too.

'96 R1100RS. 49 states and 123,875 miles since I got it in '02.
12 sets of tires, 2600 gallons of gas, A dozen oil changes with the related tune up stuff. 3 sets of spark plugs. One clutch at 100,000 miles (preventative maintenance). One battery (Also preventative maintenance). One cam chain tensioner (The 14 wasn't the first bike to rattle on start up). Two sets of front brake pads. I've never had to add a drop of oil between services.
Hmmm. I guess I got lucky

What a load of crap they spout!
"The über-powerful K1300S, touted as the lightest (503 pounds dry) and most-powerful bike in a class that includes Suzuki's legendary 2008 Hayabusa and Kawasaki's 2008 ZX-14,"... .6-inch longer, 62.4-inch wheelbase... 1293cc inline-Four. The engine yields a claimed 175 hp, 7 more than the K1200S ".
SO, let me get this straight: Somehow 175hp at the crank makes it the most powerful bike in its class??? Guess if you're gonna go off manufacturers claims, then these need to get put into the mix:
2008
Ninja ZX-14
Engine Type Inline four-cylinder 4-stroke DOHC
Engine Displacement 1352cc
Compression Ratio 12:1
Final Drive Chain
Wheel Base 57.5 in.
Fuel Capacity 5.8 gal.
Dry Weight 485 lbs.
2008
Hayabusa
Engine Displacement 1340cc
Compression Ratio 12.5:1
Final Drive Chain
Wheel Base 58.5 in.
Fuel Capacity 5.5 gal.
Dry Weight 485 lbs.
Guess them bavarians have gotten into the shroom stash again...

Rear wheel, huh? I call BS on that. Considering there 7hp less K1200S only made 142hp to the rear wheels! Guess I need to get my 14 on there dyno, I'd finally be able to break the 200hp mark without spending all that money! WooHoo!!

i will say this about the HP dust up. it varies with a dozen circumstances coming into play.
thats why they have ignition switches to avoid a lot of magazine racing.
me thinks
k bike; busa; & kaw for the tried & true "smak down' side by side at the strip!!!!
put up or SHUT UP !!!!!!
turn those ignition switches & stop mag racing !!!!
fry clutches, crunch trannys[dont go there], flag wheelies, me thinks the k bike is easily ONE
(1) second slower than the kaw or busa. in fact i doubt it gets out of the 11's !!!!!!
Thats Right !

has anyone noticed that some of that article is either flamboyant or simply
disinformation. i dont feel to good about the top end only going 66k miles when many
previous models have exceeded that mark mightily. no less the article also claims the engine has desmodromic valves. well maybe ?!?!?!?!?! if the complete valve system has been changed from the initial iteration. i suppose thats possible. there are several different forms of desmo actuation that have ben explored by several manufacturers. while the article does not delineate i dont think the new k bike has desmo valves.

who cares flite leader, I like a sport tourer bike for a sport-tourer, not a drag race bike. I'd prefer it smooth from bottom-up than be the "most HP" bike on the market. I didn't think it'd turn into an HP bike thread.
maybe they'll offer it in an extended swing arm model and dyno functionality built in?

obviously you care as you mentioned the Specious rear wheel HP rating.
no less that platform comes in 3 other models giving you many choices rather
than to infer it was in the smack down category.. sport touring could easily be
construed to be the GT model. regardless my initial thrust was that many previous owners
have had Many associated problems with that platform. i never mentioned the performance characteristic or capabilities.
yet 175 rear wheel HP gets me spongy !!!
while i dont think thats true by a long shot, i wouldnt want the headaches if it were.
now you backtrackin !!!!!

Great assumption.
That ZX14 of mine was the smoothest bike I ever owned. The litre bikes I've owned turn faster but can't compare with smooth.
#1 I only hold a bike a year - year and a half.
#2 Mine repeatly went in the shop for an oil leak and I got tired of it.
Again, the BMW will be a better sport-touer than the ZX14. At least throw the BMW some competition in regards to sport-touring, such as the Connie 14

I'd love to experience owning a BMW motorcycle for a season.
The price tag of one and the bikes that are currently in my garage...
Well, there's always next season!

so no one posted the 09 price. i will on the 1300 gt. 22,000 bucks the 08 was 17,000. i can not imagin it is worth 10,000 ,more than my c14.more yuppie stuff to go wrong. one thing i learned is you will never convince a person with the bmw gene in his blood that there is a cheeper bike out there just as good for the price.
hell you can get a new car for 22,000.
http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/machine/machine.asp
i guss someone will talk about always seeing them with high milage. well for the price i can see why the people ride the hell out of them. that is a big investment to sit in the shop and only use 300mi a year.
it looks like it does get 50 mpg though. i got 39.2 on my c14 today with november hess high test.

I drove the new k1300 gt this weekend. To start with it has a longer wheel base, so it's not smaller, maybe a little lighter (30lbs) The clutch chattered on take off on a bike with 6 miles on it, I've never experienced this on a new bike, really blowed my mind. The shaft drive kinda flexed it's butt around like a normal bmw, doesn't happen a the C14. I hit the interstate, in 6th gear 4000 rpm I was running 68 mph,(wtf) which I guess it should out 60-80 about everything, but test drove the C14 and at 4000 i think it was 88 mph, damn that's a lot of difference. Power and drivetrain to the rear wheel was way smoother on the 14. Fuel injection was smoother as well. The 14 doesn't have cruise, the windshield doesn't do as good a job (to short), but man I can do a lot with the $8500 I saved, and man that black 14 sure look good sitting in the garage
