Chapter 11 for American Suzuki's Auto Division - Bikes to Follow?

The Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg today reported that American Suzuki Motor Corp filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Suzuki claims that they are returning to their roots with a focus on their bike and ATV products, so 2 wheeled Suzuki supporters may not need to worry too much. However some convincing may be necessary with disappointed fans enduring a constant stream of bold new graphics (and maybe new brakes) since the financial crisis hit. Riders are left wondering what may become of this once great performance powerhouse.

From "American Suzuki to file for bankruptcy, end U.S. auto sales" @ Los Angeles Times

American Suzuki Motor Corp. said Monday that it will file for bankruptcy protection and will stop selling cars in the U.S.

The Brea-based company plans to restructure so that it can continue to sell Suzuki motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and marine outboard engines.

“The realignment is intended to better position ASMC for long-term success and is a return to the company’s roots in the U.S. market, which began with motorcycles,” the company said in a statement.

The Chapter 11 restructuring petition will be filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Santa Ana.

Suzuki started selling cars in the U.S. back in 1985. It is best known for the Samurai sport-utility and the Swift compact car.

But the company has been almost an afterthought in U.S. auto sales in recent years. Through the first 10 months of this year, the company has sold roughly 21,000 vehicles in the U.S., about 1,000 less than last year.

Its best-selling vehicle this year is the SX4, a small crossover.

Suzuki said that its “automotive division was facing a number of serious challenges,” including the low sales volume, a dearth of models, the unfavorable exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen, the cost of the maintaining a dealership network and the regulatory environment for the automotive industry in the U.S.

Analysts said the company had trouble competing in the U.S.

“I don't think it's a big surprise given their lackluster sales performance of recent years. They have have low margin, low-priced cars with small volume. That's far from the ideal combination,” said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with auto information company Edmunds.com.

“Over the long term it's hard to sustain a brand on such little volume when you don't have a healthy margin like exotic or specialty brands,” Caldwell said.

Suzuki said it will continue to honor warranties and will provide automobile parts and service through its parts and service dealer network.

From my perspective, this just is not good. I've had a few of the Suzuki Swifts and the older GT's were fun. I've still got one of the GT's and plan on doing a custom turbo kit for it using an Evo VIII 16g turbo. BTW, my GT weighs 1580 pounds empty. Doesn't take a lot of power to move it. Just a fun little car. Too bad Suzuki couldn't have kept something like that in the mix to compete with all the little Hawn-duhs I see all over that are modded and have a fanatic following.

i don't thinks so.. i think now with discontinue the auto production the focus will be on two wheels but you have to be able to make exciting products from performance to quality and appearance which some of those have been lacking recent years... same old boring bikes with no changes but only few simple color changes.. they have to step up to compete with other manufactures..and i i hope they do..

I hope bikes arnt next. Competition is good for us as consumers and Suzuki has made some awesome machines. I have seen this coming for a while with no new models and them skipping a model year completely a few years back. I hope they can rebound.

look at it this way ..getting out of the car business and them stop pumping bike money into the cars business to keep it afloat.. can now let them put that money into bikes..

Elsewhere in the world, Suzuki cars sell in far greater numbers, particularly in India, which accounted for 40 percent of its 2.49 million annual sales last year, according to Bloomberg. Suzuki is planning to build a sixth plant in India next year.

People in the rest of the world have been paying $14k for liter bikes for years. The US market was subsidized, and now that the economy remains in the shitter, you can continue to expect to pay the same or more as everyone else for your products - from bikes to TVs.

$14k is just a start .

ok.. that is why you don't see alot of new bikes on the road and they are still shit load of 2011 left in the dealeships...hmmm i wonder why??? and the same dealers that they did not believe on selling used bikes they are selling shit load of them now and that is where their majority of sells coming from... they learned how it works to survive..
fish, have you ever thought about why in last two decades or more japanese bike outsold most italian or british or german bikes.. it is because the value.. and you know why bmw, ducati and triumph etc etc did not sell as well??...are those bikes bad bikes or what??... no it is because they are freaking expensive and japanese bike had one thing to go for them and that was a great value and now that is not the case anymore.. and i don't care who's in fault.. it is the fact..
and if don't get it right in this economy it will get worse...

japanese car manufactures learned the last few years to not jack the price and added thousands of dollars more tech and luxury features to their cars to be competitive otherwise they won't sell shit either...

I hope they survive, they make amazing bikes, IMO the only bike that is better then a busa is the zx14r, in fact I was going to buy one before the zx14r got released and changed my mind.

And I think they make the best boat outboard motors in the world!!!

I am not brand loyal, I will buy the best bike for my money at the time and hope for the best.

I'm glad I don't plan on buying anymore bikes for a very long time, with the way the prices have jumped since I bought the busa and 14. I've had my busa since I picked it up new in 04....great bike that I'll be keeping forever. Same with my 06 turbo 14. I'm keeping the xr650 ds for a good long time as well
The stretched/slammed/chromed/cammed gsxr-1100 is prolly going bye bye tho......unless I decide to drag it

I'm kinda wondering how much longer the busa will be around tho....it would be a real shame to have the bike that turned the big sportbike world upside-down go away

The bike world's moving away from Busa's ever since they started reading about 1bad here and Busa's. That's the real reason Suzuki is going bankrupt.

I am sure it will be a year or two before they release new busa... I am sure it will be a bike will out pull/hp the current king (zx14).

I think Kawi is watching this closely as we are... I also believe they truly want to ensure this HP war, as with the auto industry continues. Kawi has out sold Suzuki in the last few years in total bike sales.
