Never could figure out why Kawasaki put 21mm pins in the 12R to start with. About a retarded move from most engine building perspective. Why so big? Who needs the extra weight up there and not only does the pin weigh a lot but the whole rod beam has to be massive and that weighs a ton swinging around at 10 grand plus! I'm sure the pins have a thinner wall to make up for the dia, but wouldn't it be smarter to use a smaller pin, longer rod in these aspirated motors? If a turbo motor will live at 18mm and in reality 17mm why would Kawasaki think 21mm was required? Several of the new 1K motors are using pins as small as 15mm making the same power the 12R made 12 years ago if not more... A lot off topic I know but your comment about 18mm pins stirred up questions that have never been addressed to my knowledge. Surely I'm not the only person to ever ask these questions about those big ass pins .......and those pistons look like the weigh a ton. Even a boosted motor can be slowed down with enough heavy parts. There's something to be said for how a motor accelerates through it's range. It's not just the motor with the most power that runs the best. Often times a motor with less power that accelerates faster is faster. Of course on the salt of something like that it wouldn't be a problem. That damaged piston died from ignition issues not from being weak. Having excessively heavy duty parts in there will cover up problems that ordinarily would destroy lighter weight, weaker parts for sure but proper tuning and engine management will allow the lighter weight parts to live and they are a heap more forgiving on the crank and bearings slinging around in there.
