2007 ZX14 Frame Completely Broke Saturday

Back in 2008 or whenever Kawi sent out the recall letters I took my 07 ZX14 to the dealer and had it checked out. No problems found. Never really thought about it again until Saturday was doing a little trip to Winthrop over highway 20 with my wife on the back of the bike. Just before Newhalem i went over 2 bumps in a row that just felt wrong. Felt like i had no suspension whatsoever. Pulled over to the shoulder and tried to put the kickstand down, would not go down because the bike was too low. The rear tire was actually touching the rear fender.

Walked the bike down to the next pullout (Goodell Creek Campground). While waiting for a tow truck i started looking around under the bike and the frame crossmember that was the subject of the recall on 06 - 07 zx14s was completely broken loose from the frame. The welds on both sides broke through.

The bike only has about 33,000 miles on it. I do the occasional trackday but mostly just road trips riding fairly quickly but nothing crazy. Bike is completely stock.

Wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Going to go to the dealer that did the inspection today and see if Kawasaki will take care of this since it was the subject of a recall and obviously should not have catastrophically failed like this.Overall feel lucky that it did not cause an accident, but still sucks.

Wow. That's crazy!!! Glad you were alright and no one was injured. Where did it break? Going to have to go through old posts to see other members pix to see if it's the same failure?

Amazing.

Yeah, i was feeling pretty lucky about that too especially since my wife was on it with me.

Its the same spot as those recall posts (both welds on the frame crossmember where the shock attaches are broken clean through and the crossmember shifted back about an inch). I will see if i can get my phone up under there to take pictures when i get home and post them.

Did you make it to Winthrop? How is the highway? Was thinking of going that route to Electric City but thought it might still be cold? Snow on the ground? BTW did Winthrop burn down or somwthing last year?

No, only made it to newhalem, got towed home from there. The highway was totally clear but we had not really started gaining elevation at that point. From the DOT website the highway is open with no restrictions. I think it was 2015 there were major wildfires in the area, but the town did not burn.

Do you know if it was over torqued originally? Sounds like the damage was done & missed when they "checked" it out. I know my '06 wasn't over torqued or I would of sold it after the check. Saw a few pics of bad frames back in the day, scary. Glad you weren't hurt.

IF I remember correctly I did not have to leave the bike while a bolt kit was ordered or anything. I believe it was supposed to have been fine. Talked to Kawi customer service this afternoon. Their computer showed the recall was done and they gave me a log # to give the dealer when I make an appointment, so seems like they are going to take care of it.
