Thoughts on storing gloves & age related gear failure
http://www.bikeland.org/board/viewthread.php?FID=52&TID=77883
Interesting gear failure... my A* gloves "died" during storage two winters ago. They're stored in my gear closet in the garage and they grew mold for no reason (see link above).
I cleaned them up spring 2015 - tried several things including washing them... ended up soaking them in Balistol. Probs seemed to be solved. Finished out last season (bleached out gear cabinet just because though only effected item was the gloves year before.)
Pull the gloves out out this spring - They are more or less the way they were when I put them away at the end of last season but now but they shrank in strange ways. Some sections shrank more than others. Some didnt shrink at all. Some sections (left glove between thumb and finger) shrunk in one direction and not another.
All in all rather fascinating. Gloves are just strange. No idea what caused them to fester 2 seasons ago. No idea why they changed shape this winter. No idea why its only the gloves and these particular gloves - all the other gloves we have are fine.
In same gear closet boots are fine, helmets okay, pants okay. Jacket okay but liner at elbows is shedding some black mystery material.
Curious to see gear start to fail from non use. Dry clean storage area. I had dry-z-air in the closet before but now I put a fan in it just to keep the air moving around even though its only the gloves meeting their doom.
Anyone else have experience with this?
At least its not like when the stupid half brained roofers messed up the roof and molded some of my older helmets and I had to toss them.
