08 zx14 engine rattle(with video)
Hello all, Long time reader and first time poster. Last season I picked up 08 zx14 with approx 18k on the clock. she treated my great(minus a blown stator). Stator was replaced, but developed a minor leak from the stator cover. Gasket replaced a number of times with OEM and aftermarket and with and without sealant. she would still leak(i think its from the cable).
Anyway, I didnt mind the minor leak so I left it alone. Until oneday I rode her about 15-20 miles and she started to get sluggish. I got to my destination and she would not restart. i knew the battery was fine as she was on a tender. I stood her up and lookin in the oil glass.......not a drop. I found a local bike shop and bought 2qt of 10w40 synthetic to get up to a better level. she took them both and she started right up. I dint want her too far from home so i rode her home. about 10 miles into the ride, she started to give a slight rattle. I continued to ride at no higher than 3rpm. by time i got about 3 miles from home she sounded like i was riding a dirtbike or supermoto.
I have not rode her since and the video i am posting is the only other time i have even started her. I have not touched her(no oil/filter change or check) dont want to waste $80 in oil and filers and it will just be wasted when the engine is taken apart.
I am not mechanically inclined to pull the engine apart or even drop the oil pan. I know that i will need to take her to the shop but i was hoping for somewhat of an idea of what "may" be the issue. Valve? Rod?
Hopefully some of the veterans can steer me in the right direction.
here's the link to the video

I admit it's hard to tell from a mobile phone video/audio clip that is only a few seconds long, but honestly, it doesn't really sound that bad. The tick sounds almost external. I think it is a sticking CCT. It even goes away during a rev for a half second. Those CCTs make all kinds of weird noises. I had one that rattled at first start-up til it got oil pressure... and I have had one that rattled after the bike was fully warmed up... it would come and go. An APE manually adjusted CCT was the fix. Look there.

Hmm could be a cam chain tensioner . The noise would be coming from the right side just above the oil filler hole.
A simple check to verify if its not rod bearings is drain the oil into a clean container and inspect what is at the bottom or even in the oil. If you see "fools gold" tiny goldish flakes in the oil and if is a lot then it is a bearing that died and ground up into the oil.
even taking a hack saw to cut the oil filter in half will help to see what metal shavings might be in there.

I appreciate all the responses... I'm gonna spend all day Saturday seeing what may be the problem. If I pull the CCT is there anything that I should look for? I'll drain the oil and inspect.

Well the cct is pretty devious . You could look at it , take it apart and put it back together and not notice anything wrong with it but it is still bad. Sometimes you can see some wear on it but that isn't always a telltale sign of anything.
Mine failed at 50,000 miles . I took it apart inspected and didn't really find anything . So i put it back in and it still rattled like crazy. I modded mine and it's been perfect ever since . My 14 is at a little over 148,000 miles now.
Also beware on removing the cct. It fully extends when you remove it and the only way to reset it is to have the valve cover off and pushing the release on the cct with a long thin flathead screwdriver.

Yea..... I'm not very mechanical.. I need to learn more.. I'm probably gonna sell her to a mechanic friend. He's giving 3300. I'll add another 5k and buy a 2012. The sad part is I really had a ball with this bike. NY to Mia and back. She was a good companion

Well hopefully it wont come to that. Inspect the oil , take some pics and post them up .
If there are shiny metal rivers in the oil then its likely bearings are gone in the bottom end.
if there is no metal in the oil then i would try replacing the cct with a manually adjustable one from zxzone.com
Also get someone knowledgeable to inspect the cct to make sure that its working properly cause if it is the problem then its a cheap fix.

Well.. I was just speculating based on the audio of that clip presumably made from a mobile phone. It just doesn't sound like a rod knock to me and even goes away for a half second when he revs it a little. Might be a rod knock after all. If the bike was in my garage I'd know in a hurry... and I certainly wouldn't be asking for internet forum diagnosis from a mobile phone recording. That said.. still sounds like CCT to me... based on what I have, silly mobile phone recording.

I appreciate all the advice.. Unfortunately I have no garage, nor indoor space to actually work on my bike. And I have little to no experience doing anything more than oil change, radiator swap, etc. So at the moment all i have is my mobile phone and an Internet forum with other, more skilled riders.

Oh I get it. Use what ya got. Any updated info?
U can get a cheap stethoscope at harbor freight to help pin point the noise. If it is a rod, #3 will likely be the one that is knocking, you can drop the pan to see and feel which one is the culprit. Here's to hoping its not the rod.

Yea only can work with what I have. I found a skilled mechanic who is coming to purchase her tomorrow. I found a left over 2014 for 10.8 out the door. So i'll take the 3000 im gettin for the bike and the 4000 that I was going to shell out on a repair if the motor was actually screwed and finance the rest and buy New. May not be the best decision but I don't want to put more money into her for a non definite fix. She served me well while I had her and couldn't see her parted out. If it's an easy fix then they guy buying her is getting a hell of a deal. Thank for the help everyone
