Two different questions fish.....Remembered as most iconic? Busa. Which one is best overall? The 14. My favorite? The 12R. I have had several of all three and still have all three. For where I live with great country roads less than 5 minutes from my house, of those three I like the 12R the best. Shortest wheelbase by over 2 inches and more power than it takes to smolder the tire out of 60 mph corners it works the best. ( of those three )It's also the best looking. The 14 and 14R are the most comfortable, best brakes, best clutch, smoothest and highest quality feeling of the three.... absolutely unflappable. The Busa? Eh....it does everything well but really lacks in the looks department. In 1999 it was the benchmark. For me in 2000 the 12R stole my heart...... After buying a new 2000 12R I rode it and my new Busa back to back over the same roputes a zillion times. I sold the Busa and bought another new 2000 12R.

There's no question about it- the 12R was a decent bike, and I love my 14R, but even people that don't ride have heard of the Hayabusa- it's a legendary bike where the two Kawasakis have never reached that status- 'best' or 'fastest' doesn't enter into it when 'icon status' is concerned- there are many body-builders who have eclipsed what Arnold Scharwzenegger managed to make of himself, but who's the icon?

This question will come with several different opinions because not all opinions will be based on the same data.... Sales numbers will say the Busa will be most remembered motorcycle of the 3. Performance wise there's a HUGE difference between the 14 and 14R so which are you talking about? The 12R is at the heart of both 14's. Both 14's share the frame technology that was developed for the 12R. Today in 2014 the 12R is still the fastest Naturally Aspirated Kawasaki in the mile and 1.5 mile on the planet! No power adders allowed.. The 12R was a much truer sport bike than the 14 family but the 14 family are closer to the Busa than the 12R ever was. It's been said many times before the 12R was Revolutionary and the 14 is evolutionary.. If you want the fastest thing your money can buy the 14R is the bike today in 2014. I see more Busa Gangsta type dumping their Busa's everyday to go and buy a 14R.
When history remembers these bikes I think the Busa will be remembered as the greatest platform to ever see a dealers floor. I think hard core motorcycle people that use a motorcycle for more than a drag bike or a 1 miler will remember the 12R as historic.
We all know the 12R was taken from the shipping crate and detuned before they were ever delivered to the dealer floor. I have personally noted the throttle bodies on the 2000 through 2003 ZX12R are restricted to 42.5 mm NOT the 46mm they are supposed to be. Yes they are 46mm at the blade but directly behind the throttle shaft they have a NASTY STEP in the bore where the machining process stopped and they were left unfinished die cast from there forward.. As opposed to 2004 & 2005 12R throttle bodies that have a secondary set of throttle blades that are 46 mm from the blade all the way out the bottom. They are also larger dia at the top of the throttle body where the stack fits as well 48.5 mm verses 47 mm for the earlier version. The reason they are correct sized is because Kawasaki can control the power via the secondary throttle blades at will. Makes a better package since the ECU can give and take power according to various situations. Any engine tuner will tell you a 3.5 mm reduction in bore size especially with a nasty step on the wall like the early model 12R had is a recipe for REDUCED POWER ! Kawasaki didn't have to change the spec since the throttle bodies was 46 mm at the blade which threw most everyone off the path of what they did except those that built motors and kept what they discovered to their self. I've been doing this stuff for the better part of 35 years at this point I went back and checked carbs as far back as 1973 Z1-900's all the way up to my 94 ZX11 and none of them were restricted like that past the blade. I've checked fuel injectors on my 10R, 12R both early and late models, and the 14's. Only the early 12R's had this restriction that I have found. Yes Virginia the 2000 ZX12R was purposefully tampered with before they were released and that tampering doomed the bikes on the sales floor all across the world. Why? Only the highest of high level management at KHI will ever know why they spent years and millions developing the ultimate rocket ship only to de nut it moments before it hit the streets.
The point to the above paragraph is this.. Had Kawasaki not tampered with the 12R at the last possible second just before the customers took delivery the sales between it and the Busa would have been very much different because the 12R would have swallowed the mighty Busa in every possible way performance wise.
History often times is altered by hidden agendas which most of us will never be privy to knowing.
