ZX14 Starter Trouble
I have a 2006 ZX14 with a bit over 3K miles on it. While riding the bike was cutting in and out. It wasn't getting any electric power. All the gauges would go blank and the bike would quit running. It would then restart on it's own and run for a while and repeat the power outage.
I made it home and truned the bike off. It had no power and wouldn't start.
I removed the battery and tested it. It was fine. I then noticed that the battery ground to the frame was loose. I reinstalled the battery and tightened the ground. It got power as it should.
But, now the starter is grinding as if the starter is not meshing with the gear. It is a high pitched grind and not a clicking sound.
I think I installed the batter correctly. The ground for the blue connector is grounded to the bracked that holds the battery in place and the battery ground is grounded to the frame in a different place.
The bike has a battery tender lead installed.
Did I ruin the starter? Did i ground the bike properly?
I am thinking that the power surgers may have ruined the starter or the starter silenoid?
I just checked the battery voltage using the instrument cluster and it only displayed 10.8 volts. I am now guessing that the battery doesn't have enough power to properly turn the starter? I stuck it on the tender and will try to start it in a couple of hours or so.
Thanks for your help.
