questions about power commander
these are dumb questions, but I know nothing about power commanders and maps ect..im thinking about getting the power commander 5 because the bike shop near me says it is an incredible difference and worth every penny, my question is if I install it myself (it will save me 200.00 that's what they want), but will it be rideable until I can get it to them to load the map? will it be just like normal until they load there map? also someday when I change the battery and there is no power do I loose the map? and where do most of you mount it? thanks in advance

The power commander with no map loaded will make no changes to the stock fueling. Follow the instructions for installing it, being careful to ground it properly and not crack the gas tank cover. It is easy for anyone familiar with basic tools.
This video explains it pretty well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVwjZjpTEIM
You won't lose the map when the battery is disconnected either.

I should have asked first if you have done any mods. If you are running a stock bike with stock exhaust (or just a slip on) then you will probably notice no/little improvement with the addition of the power commander.

Yes it will be rideable with a "0" map. Just a FYI, the PC5(or whatever model) works with your existing map stored in your ECU. It gives you the ability to fine tune the stock map for your mods, elevation, etc....
Personally if you do not have a full exhaust system I would not be adding a PC5.

great advice. if you are not going to go with a complete exhaust consider flashing your ecu instead. im running slipslip-ons with a ecu and it makes a very good difference. the flash can
done for the exhaust you already have even the stock one.

What year is your bike? From what I understand, and may more experienced riders please chime in, if you are riding an '08 or newer, removing the flies gives marginal improvement. IMHO, not worth paying a shop to do for you. The older bikes, I understand, had a huge improvement, but with KHI changing when the secondary flies open, it doesn't make a significant difference.
BTW, my Kawasaki mechanic also said I should remove the secondary flies on my 2010, and was confused when I referred to the ECU changes KHI made in '08. I trust the more experienced gear heads in this forum far more than my mechanic.

Buy one, you need it..........Even if you keep your stock exhaust, you need to lean out the mixture on this beast for max power. Trust me it's worth it!

Well...... Depending on how much the bike shop is going to charge for the "fly removal", it might make more sense to have your ECU reflashed. With the latest generation of flashes, especially on the 2012 it pays to leave the flys in unless you are drag racing (the performance difference is 1-2 HP at the top). Slip on's are not going to give you max power like a full exhaust: with that being said, what are you planning on doing with with this bike? Street riding or racing? Here is the bottom line- You have a beautiful 2012 motorcycle that can become a huge money pit (I have spent well over $5k in performance add ons), If i had it to do all over again my mods would have been : Titanium pipe, PCV, ECU flash, quick shifter, windscreen and stainless lines.

thanks seno, I mainly just ride normal lots of high speeds, twistys , normal stuff no racing, but it seems like since I put on my slip ons its got a little more power but not near as smooth as it was with stock and they tell me it will completely smooth this out, with a little more power, so that's what made me interested, the smoothness, it wont turn into a money pit because im too cheap to put much money in it, I've had about 10 bikes and have never put more than a grand in any of them
