Fuel running out of the overflow tube.
First, thanks to everyone for the troubleshooting tip with my electrical. Turned out to be the contacts on the starter switch. Now I've got fuel running out of the overflow tube at the bottom of the bike. Filled it up to go for a ride and out it ran. Caught 2.5 gallons. any ideas?

Need more info. Is it a calif model with evap system? Which drain tube? There is a wash/rain/spill tube that drains out bottom. Really.. need more info to help.

Sorry. Not the CA. model. And I'm assuming it's the fuel tube as that's what's coming out. Now that the tanks half empty I shook the bike side to side thinking maybe a stuck float and gas began trickling out of the tube again. B.t.w. she fired right up and ran flawlessly after a long winter. I was happy, happy, happy.
Is there a problem with me just running on a half tank 'till I get the issue resolved? The tubes nowhere near anything hot.

I would be concerned if fuel was spilling out in front of the rear wheel. Could be dangerous to ride with it like that.

Ive had the same thing kinda happen to me. I just filled the tank up, went home, parked it on kickstand and gas started to drip from a hose from the bottom on the left side. I think it was the overflow hose. Full tank leaning on a warm day... but it didnt drain half of my tank, only a few drops.

Had something similar happen to me on my 07 when I stored it for the winter.... It was really cold when I filled it up and then put it into a warm garage and covered it. Unfortunately I did not check on it at all and the tank seal & overflow did not function. Needless to say I am glad that I had the 5 year warranty because the gas seeped out of the tank fill and ate the paint something awful. The dealer warrantied it.....
Same though, gas tank deep in the ground and its cold, warm day can = gas expanding and leaking out if overflow... BUT, 2.5 gallons??? Possible that the overflow hose was acting like a siphon some how?

There is an overflow pipe that runs from the fill area under the cap THROUGH the tank and out the bottom. If you overfill the tank or park it in the sun with a full tank the fuel will run through the pipe and out the hose.......
If the pipe cracks inside the tank all the fuel above the crack will run out. My 2000 ZX12R's had a recall for that very thing.

That is exactly how it is supposed to work smatlock. However if the pipe cracks INSIDE the tank (from vibration or corosion) all the fuel above the crack will run out. So in Fatboy's case his crack is probably some where halfway down the pipe.

Yeah..it was indeed a cracked overflow tube. Kawi. put a new tank on under recall.
Didn't cost a think but patience. (Back ordered.) Well, and the price of a new "Icon" jacket I just had to have.
