Hi all, New Guy to the Forum...
Hello all fellow ZX14 owners. I recently bought a 07 from a friend in a hard place for a good price. The problem is third gear did not work when I got it. It pops out of the gear. Now I've heard is possibly a bent shift fork or forks but everyone I ask pretty much says "OH we have to split the case" and have not gotten a real fine answer on how much the repair will be. I don't want a shop splitting the case and and throw some outrageous amount of money to fix. This is sole means of transport along with the wife vehicle but has anyone encountered anything like this or does anyone have a ball park figure i could be looking at? I had a similiar problem but was pulling it apart anyway and just recently put it back together.
Shift forks will run you $54/each and you'll need three of them. $70 for a new head gasket and $120 for new rings. Add another $200 for seals and misc parts and you're lookin at aprox $600 without labor charges. Best of luck to ya.

Why not? If there's a problem w/the transmission, it would behoove you to inspect everything else while motor is out of the bike.

Not sure, he did ride kind of hard, wheelies and was pretty much a dare devil. But never dropped the bike. So more than likely he f*cked up somewhere speeding. It will go into gear during low rpms it will stay for a bit. Any kind of acceleration, it pops right out. Also it will downshift into third just fine, someimes gets stuck while skipping gear to 4th. All other gears are flawless.

Add at least two gears to that price also,if its jumping out after engaged..

Well it only pops out of third during acceleration. When coming to a light it will ddoownshift in every gear including 3rd. No other gear has an issue. So what Im gathering your saying isa gear next to third could also be damaged as well? And from what the costs your giving I could be looking at close to $1000 just in parts. Does it make more sence to try and find another transmission? Or just stick with the one I have and repair it? I use to do engine swaps on civics when I was younger but only have done brakes and oil on bikes. So not to experienced to do it on my own.

It could be at least $1,500 on labor if ur not going to do it urself.. do u race or just street ride?

I only street ride. I see trannys complete with gears and forks on ebay. Is this a better route to take? I dont see a hyperlink tab but here is the page I was looking at.

That might take care of the parts cost but still u have to pay labor, and if u are gonna drop the motor it might be best to add extra stuff to it... Maybe try the aftermarket drum shift star see if that helps, if not u might have to take the hit on that one...

I had the same thing on an FJ1100 many years ago.... It's an expensive proposition but then again how much did you pay for the bike? It will probably cost 2kish by the time all is said and done if you have someone else do the labor. Good luck...... You might as well have everything else looked at while your at it.

Buy you a motor/trans off ebay and put it in and ride while you fix the other one. That way you can take your time and do it how ever you want and still be riding at the same time. When your done swap'em out and sell the stocker. jes a suggestion.

Bike cost me about 4gs. It kind of fell in my lap. I wasn't looking at the time. But hell I wasn't going to buy it but.....Who the hell wouldn't? I guess first I need to find myself a reliable mechanic and fair mechanic. Anyone know of one in Orlando/Kissimmee Fl area by chance?

Don't remember exactly where in Fl he's located but Chris Jones has been very helpful to me at the track. I'm sure someone on here can point you in the right direction.

Get a hold of reputable Bikeland member Lee Prichard (smokinzx14) at 727 391 2995. He's in the Tampa area, but it's well worth the drive to have him do it.

I'd buy from Cory before I went ebay on a used powerplant simply for the fact that he's got a reputable company to support. He currently has an '06 engine ( '06/'07 were same gen, injector and ecu changes were made in '08 ) in a bike he's parting out that's good to go if you want to contact him about it, here's a link.

He's a good guy, I've bought from him without any issues.
