14 update. car guy head porting?? motor together back in frame

Got the motor back together and in the frame on the 14. Thanks to a board member that sold me a Adams adjutable swingarm it is starting to look like a bike. Had a guy at work do my headwork. He came from the formula 1 racing engine department. I figure if he worked on car engines that turn 22K RPM and make big power out of small displacement engines I would give him a try plus it was free. After a few minutes talking with him he knows way more about the tech. side of engines than I care to know. check this out. He said that the class has a 17K RPM limit because some of the other manufactures engines cant live with a higher rev limit and complained about it. Some for testing have been turned to 27K RPM. Maybe it will make a few ponies maybe it want. We will see. I did put HD vavle springs in it., through in a new set of rings for good measure, all new rod and main bearings, checked the trans for rounded off dogs and worn shift forks, clutch plates still looked new. I will snap some pics after I get some of the wiring hooked back up. The bike was used and abused so the plastic is in OK shape but it has some scratches and rough spots. It took me forever to clean the engine out. the bike has just over 4K miles but the engine looked like the oil had never benn changed. It was all stock, stock airfilter, flies still in and no powercommander. Only good thing is it has a Brock AH exhaust.

Here is a pic of it rolling again. It's in the lower 50's so a little cold out to work on it. The swingarm is polished and I kind of like the way it looks. Black it out or leave it polished?? I think it will go good with the AH exhaust. I have the engine harness hooked up. got to get the Exhaust and radiator back on. Hooked the power commander up, removed the flies, installing a K&N filter. Got a EK 530 ZZZ chain with rivet link. I am going to try and get the upper, tank and sides on this weekend. more pics to follow.

Ha Ha it does look like crap. all those leaves falling. plus I got too many projects and no time. I should have taken some pictures. He did more reshaping than pretty looking stuff on the head. I am no head guy but I guess if you can work on M-B Formula 1 engines you should at least have some skills. I do need to clean up a bit but I have been staying up late watching TV then sleeping in. I am looking forward to running this bike. It took forever to find a broken 14 at the sale and I am going to keep this one. There are just not many around here, It's hard working on two bikes at once. The 03 Busa sitting in the background is the other project. Once I get the 14 up and running I will take it and have it dyno tuned. I had a leftover 900# progressive spring and was going to try and mate that to the 09 Busa shock and use it on the 14.

Any chance of some pictures straight into the ex ports before you install the header? Curious to see what he did with the floors. To fill a cyl of a 20 ths plus rpm small displacement engine must have its own brand of magic flow dimensions. Completely understand if you/ he doesn't want that out there,so Thanks either way.......

I'd powercoat the swingarm or atleast paint it black. It'll look kinda weird with just the swingarm chrome and the AH chrome with the rest of the bike black. That's just my prefrence...

Bill I had already put the header and rad. back on and trying to get some running time on it today. I dont think it's magical, more like millions of dollars in R&D, The engines are 2.4 liter 90 degree V8's producing around 850 HP at the wheels (Estmated). We have a Formula 1 car in the plant museum. I read that that per the rules the engines have to be used untouched for two race weekends in a row and for Friday Qualifing they can use a different engine (one they run the guts out of to get a good grid position). Just looking at one of the engines on a disply stand it looks like it has roller/needle bearing crank/rods/camshafts which would require oil volume more than pressure. The one in the museum operated at 18K RPM. I am not an expert on head work so I really could not tell what was really done but I don't think it was a whole bunch. He is a German guy who likes motorcycles and brought over a emerald green motoguzzi road race bike from the 70's that he completely restored and rides it back and forth to work. For the most part the German guys don't understand why we like dragracing. When they come over the first thing they want is a Harley or they build a bobber to ride. It's going to be a nice streetbike. I still have a stock head if it does not perform. I went with another so called head porter on my Suzuki GSXR1000 one time and it looked really slick but it made 3 hp less on the dyno and never even matched the stock head with a thin headgasket's performance at the track. So select who does your headwork carefully. Minimum they need to have some sort of flow bench to check there work. Anybody can claim to do good port work, heck I could clean one up and make it look good. You are paying for there R&D not just someone that can hog the ports out and make it look pretty.

That's very cool, about Those guys not getting why we drag race. I have heard that myself from our Bavarian brothers. I know they take great pride in the r/d they produce. When i worked for Allison, we where working on the T series med duty truck auto transmissions. The Mercedes guys were interested in the 2000 series and sent some r/d people to the center, but GM bought both 1000 and 2000 series for the duramax/truck program. The senior guy in the transmission dyno room was German. Very dry humor, but extremely driven for perfection. He didn't miss much LOL, Ill leave it at that...................

I have only cranked it up and let it run up to temp a couple of times. I ordered a new Rivet link for the chain so when it gets here I can put it on, need to put the farings back on, had to order a windscreen and bolt kit for it. I also need a 43T rear sprocket. other than that it sounds good.

Checking for leaks

Just a couple more pics. checking to make sure there are no leaks before putting the farings on. sounds good. still got to put the chain on, waiting for a windscreen and bolt/wellnut kit, needs a few odds and in's Anybody got a 43 tooth rear sprocket in steel they want to sell?

I don\n't know why but I like the polished swingarm. we will see after I get all the farings on. I might black it out.

I am going to put the 900# proggressive spring on the shock tomorrow. I will gets some pic's of that and post them. I hope it runs as good as it sounds. How can you rag a bike out in 4200 miles???

Handy Dandy do it yourself shock work

OK, As I try to stiffen up the trear of the bike I know the 14 shock spring will not work for my weight at the length of arm I want to run. So first I grabbed up the shocks I would be working with. Starting from the left, ZX-14 shock, Late model GSXR1000 shock, 2010 Busa shock and a progressive #900 pound spring.

I started out taking the zx-14 shock apart.

Once you unsrew the top locking ring run it up until it comes off on to the body then run the spring collar all the way up until the spring tension is gone. you will need to move the rubber stopper up at the bottom to get the collar off so you can remove the spring and dust cover.

Here is the shock taken apart. It's very simple and only requires simple hand tools.

The #900 pound spring is actually a little shorter than the stock spring but a whole lot stiffer

The spring was from another shock that I had and never used the stronger spring as you can see it will never tighten up so I used some parts from the GSXR1000 shock to make a spacer.

So I set it up with barley 2 inches of sag. Chain didn't come in today. Ran it a few more times and boy does it rev quick. Note to self here... If you are reving the bike up with the sprocket cover off it will spit the clutch rod out and make a nasty oil spill if you dont notice it for a few moments.

At home chain install

OK so my chain came this morning. Since this bike will be track and limited street use I went with a EK DRZ2 chain. after snaking the chain through and around the sprockets I get ready to install the rivet link masterclip. the chain came with a clip type ML and I grew up using them but feel much better about the rivet link so I ordered one of those too. with the chain on the sprockets and some slack I get ready to install the ML. Since this is a non o-ring chain I put some anti-sieze on the ML pins.

Next I use a pair of vice grips with very little pressure to push the plate over the pins. This makes it eaiser to work the chain tool when you start to press the plate. remember just light pressure is all that is needed.

Next get chain tool out (A must have for any toolbox). Position it over the plate so the pins line up with the holes in the tool. Some ML's come with plates so you can't press the plates together to tight. The EK rivet ML did not have these. You don't want to press it too tight or it will bind up and the chain will kink. I used the other links as a guide and checked it for freeplay after I used the tool.

Here is how the ML should look after you have pressed the plate in place.

Here is my method on peening the end of the pins of the ML. They make a tool and I don't have it but I have used this method for years. I bought a small 1/2 inch piece of plate for $8 dollars at a local steel supply and a Ballpeen hammer.

Take the hammer and work the ML pins with it. Use the plate to brace off of the tire and push against the back side of the ML/chain. Be careful not to touch the hub or rim or you will scratch it.

This is how the new ML should look. Adjust chain and get ready for a test ride soon.

almost complete

It's starting to look like a bike again. I need a windscreen plus the wellnuts and screws. put the lowers on. couple more small things and then try and get a few miles on the motor. I am still liking the polished swingarm.. but thats just me.

Test run today

60 out today so even though there is no lowers and the windscreen is missing I wanted to put a few miles on it before going to the dyno. I just have an older PC3 so I downloaded my old map from my 07 which had a streetmeg on it instead of the AH. Once fired up the bike has no lope like my other 14's had after it warms up. It idles smooth as silk? I have not had one in a while so maybe I just remember it having a lope and it actually does not. It revs really quick and has great throttle response. A quick run through the gears at wide open throttle produces tire spin in the first three gears. It just has a stock tire so I could never really get it to hook. In the upper gears it feels strong but I did not have another bike to compare it to so really it could be slow. It revs quick and pulls hard. It will break the back tire loose in 3rd no bproblem when you get in it hard. It shifts fine but I need my butt kicked for not sending the trans off while the motor was apart and having it undercut. No leaks and runs up to temp with no overheating problems. The shock is going to have to be tightened up and some compression and rebound adjustments made. Maybe I can get one of my buddys to bring a know powered bike out on the street to do some runs against. So far so good. I want to Dyno it closer to warmer weather.
