Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr ... Rivet master links ...

Over the years i have been working on bikes i have done 100s of rivet type links but this one is kicking my ass ..

I needed to change the gears on my ZX14R and to do so i needed to remove a few links of chain ...I had one EK ZZZ master link in stock .. The day before i just did one on Ryans new EK ZZZ chain so i already had the chain tool out and ready to do my bike .. Everything went fine till i tried to spread the rivet pin and pop ! I split the link pin ... Now i have to order a new master link ... I order two master links so i'll have a spare ...They come in and i go to install one of them and it splits the rivet pin again ...Ok ...I get the spare out and split that one also ... Ok what the hell is going on here ? Maybe my tool is bad , i have used it for years and 100s of Master links so maybe it's just worn out .. So i order new replacement parts for my chain tool and two more new Master links ... They show up today , so i go to install the master link .. One spreads just fine and i'm like cool !!! One down one to go ... I just start to spread the other pin and POP !!!! It split !!! ... I'm doing this by hand , no wrenches or power tools , just my hands.. Till now i have never had this happen ... I have the one spare Master link left but i need it for my other bike that has a ZZZ chain .. I really like running these EK ZZZ chains on my bike but i can't keep screwing up Master Links .. So here i sit on the throne , came to shit and only farted ...

put a bolt in the tool on the back side so it don't push your chain pin out ..and don't get stupid tight on the tool or it will spread apart ..it don't take much of a flare to lock the master link down ..

On the EK rivet links you have to go slow and only flare them .012 or they will split.

The last one i did today split in half and was completely gone .. In the passed i would really have to crank down on them to flare them and they never split or broke .. Maybe they changed the way they make them ? or had a bad batch.. Or maybe EK farmed them out to China to be made .. Sure got me thinking of going back to the EK DRZ2 Drag chain and using the clip link like i did on my two other ZX14s .. A little RTV on the clip and never had one single problem .. Not a good chain for the street but it's a great drag chain ..

Sounds like there may be a bad batch of links out there. May be that they have the wrong heat treatment making them too brittle.

Lee, I have had the same issue recently, I use a Regina chain breaker/ riveter.
I thinbk they use cheap metal as of late because I never had issue with my drzzz back in 06.
Likely its metalurgy but they would never admit it anyway...

Like I said on the phone, if you have the little Motion Pro tool, its a fucking toy! Was never so glad to get rid of mine. Split links all the time! I know use one like this and it works10x better.
