Changing rear tyre profile from 55 to 50
Hi all.
I've got this post in the ZX10R section too, but thought I'd try here as well.
I have a ZX14 fitted with Michillen Pilot Road II's in great condition. My fiancé', new to large bikes has just gotten her "big bike" license. She is now riding a 2007 ZX10R. A big difference from her GPX250, but she is a VERY sedate rider. Her tyres are pretty knackered in the centre, and I'm upgrading my bike to a more sports tyre and considering fitting my tires to her bike. My question is.... does anyone know exactly what effect changing from a 190/55/17 rear to a 190/50/17 would have? The front tire is the same profile (120/70/17), so won't be a problem.

Going lower profile will make the bike steer a little bit slower than with the higher. Also should make it a little bit stable when riding straight. I went the other direction with my ZX12 (200/50 to 190/55) to make the steering faster. The difference isin't dramatic and shouldn't cause any problems. But if You like going trough twisties I wouldn't recommend.

A 200/50 and a 190/55 is only a 4.5 MM difference in height which is less than 3/16th of an inch. I doubt that small of a difference would even be noticeable on these big bikes. The bigger difference would be going from the 200 mm wide to the narrower and rounder profile 190.
Otherwise, I agree with everything else.

depending on your riding ability and understanding handling characteristics...you will only notice slight differences.
It'd be about the same from new tire to a worn tire.

Well, swapped the tyres today.
Given that the old tyres were very tragic (badly worn through the centre), the swap has made an instant improvement.
I'll have to shadow her bike next ride and see if it makes a change to the speedo.

Probably most of what you are feeling is new tires vs old, but in my experience you will much more that just new vs old. Running a 55 vs a 50 re of actual size increase really improves turn in and overall characteristic of the bike. Never found any decrease in straight line stability either. All in all I think it's a win win.
