97 octane vs 87 octane

Hey everyone! I have been using 97 octane since I got my bike and was wondering if I should switch to 87 octane? Do I need to do anything special if I switch? I feel like the bike will not run ok if I switch!

On stock motor with right map u will gain hp. Higher octane slows burning wich is good if needed but will lower power when not needed. Brock and every one run the lower for racin on stock motors.

As long as it doesn't detonate your fine. I run 89 when it's HOT, and 87 the rest of the time

With cars the advantage with the premium fuels is better economy and cleaner running. I assume the same is true for bikes. Whether it's actually worth it is another question entirely.

A friend of mine took his stroker ZX-12R to a meeting and filled it with C16 which performed worse than regular unleaded. We pumped it out. He does use VP Import in his turbo bike though, to prevent the detonation which would happen at higher boost pressure with regular unleaded.

You will make more power with the lowest octane rating as long as you are not detonating. Almost any built motor will struggle with low octane though.

My advice...run the lowest octane with no detonation.

I have been trying to run 89 octane shell through mine but if I roll (not wack open) the throttle on too briskly below 5000rpms it rattles bad. not sure if it is full on detonation or just pinging. 93 octane shell an no rattles.

The one time I had it at the strip I was on 89 and seemed fine.

I've run 87 octane for years in So Fl. heat with no problems. Never had a hint of detonation.

Stupid question I'm sure but is there a difference between detonation and pinging?

Not to highjack but I have to ask. What is a good fuel for a 40 shot on the 14R. I have used 93 oct all the way up to a 200 shot on cars. I talked to Ryan Schnitz and he does not recommend C16 which for years have been the standard of VP fuel for nitrous car/bikes. He recommends a 110 either a VP or a Sunoco. He say he think the higher octane of the C16 will not let the bike reach its full potential. I have the 110 readily available at the pump on the way to my local track. However I was told that it would not be a bad idea to use some Q16. They say is a good fuel that delivers good power on/off the button.

Just FYI, Detonation and pre ignition are unrelated. Pre ignition is due to hot spots or carbon deposits that light the mixture before the spark gets a chance.

Detonation is due to uncontrolled flame propagation. The reason the bikes can run so well at a higher CR on lower Octane is the chamber designs, the alloy heads that transfer heat quickly, and squish.

In the cars, we could run at least a point or point and a half higher with alloy heads, Same chamber design.

What do you mean by it wouldn't run right?
I run 87 as well, just curious if you got a bad batch of gas.

+1

Your correct. And all detonation isn't the same either. There is mild detonation and severe detonation.....
