Tight chain or lose chain , what is faster?

I heard that a lose chain is a fast chain .. I ran my best numbers and MPH with the tight chain .. I'm running a ZZZ and just love it .. I was running a DZR2 race chain on my gen 1 bikes but it takes a lot of work because it's a non 0ring chain .. I just hate cleaning and lubing chain every race day .. The ZZZ i just lube and run the snot out of it ... It seems to run the same numbers with less work .. So what do you guys like lose or tight ? Have you seen any difference in ETs or MPH having it tight or having it lose ?

I like a little slack- also, shane should know, the land speed guys use some Teflon spray instead of chain lube. I use it, no problems.

No matter how tight you have it at a standstill it'll still look like in the above pic on the launch. I know if we don't have the chain really tight it skips on the launch. Now we've got a 16 tooth front sprocket, a helluva lotta weight to get moving and a long wheelbase so I'm sure those are factors. 60's in the low 1.3's usually.

I set my chain as tight as I can (with the swing-arm parallel with the ground !), and the wheel still roll freely.

Have someone sit on the bike or adjust your lowering links until the swing-arm is parallel with the ground ( readjust lowering links back to your race setting afterwards).

Once parallel, tighten the chain snuggly.

Then, loosen the adjustment screws (a half a flat at a time) just until the wheel rolls freely.

I know this sounds time consuming, but it well result in free horsepower.

Chain lube:
Most chain lubes are sticky, resulting in increased rolling resistance.
I use WD40 and lube the chain about every 4 passes.

side note: If you don't already do so, and feel safe doing so; set your front tire to 50psi.

Again, time consuming, but I have seen several cases were bikes have gained more than 2mph by apllying all of these steps ZZZ and non-oring.

Hope this helps,
BLK ICE

I agree with BLK ICE on the WD-40, thats all I use at the track and on the Dyno. Usually 2mph or more and as much as 3-4hp on the dyno, especially if the chain is dirty. On the dyno I'll get the drum rolling about 10mph and spray the hell out of the chain while holding a rag under the chain.

I have used WD40 a few times on my last chain to clean it but didnt pay attention to speed/power gains. WD40 works very well to remove spray wax from your chain; wheels and fairings! It leaves a film that makes cleanup easy too.

Wow. I sell this where I work but we've always used Ballistol and PB Blaster instead of this product. Maybe I should take a can back to the shop and tell the guys to try it.

That sounds good to me .. I had Chris Jones tell me to run it tight also .. I watched him set RG chain with RG setting on the bike .. He had it pretty tight .. I was thinking the best lube to free up HP would be to some Syn Oil on a rag and lightly wipe down the chain with it .. I tried that with my DZR2 chain and it took longer for the chain to start kinking up while street riding ..Lasted much longer than chain lube did ..It does get a little nasty if you use too much ..

In an ET game, a tight chain makes sense. For mph, I stick by a looser chain.
