At 16 years old I was racing dirtbikes and had a 1973 Suzuki TS-185 I rode to High School, wheelie contest in the parking lot every morning, followed by drag racing in front of the school, later in 1974 I owned a 1974 RD-350, sold that and kept racing dirtbikes, 1975 a Senior in High School I broke 3 arms in 2 months racing moto-cross, only raced one more year, 1977 I bought a new Gold Wing and started drag racing at Green Valley Race City, I was 19 years old, ridden daily on the street.
1978 bought a Yamaha XS-11 and continued drag racing, street ridden daily also, I became a wheelie monster on that bike, back in 1978 street driving was allot different than now, same hazards but more of them now. At times I was the hazard pushing my limits.
All that being said you can see I didn't go from a "riding" a dirt bike to a 200 hp streetbike, bikes then were less than half the hp of a zx14, being in moto-cross competition really gave me experience on how to control a motorcycle driven to it's limits.
I'm not saying little brother can't handle a 14, it depends on the person, I was an idiot at 16, I'm a controlled idiot at 54 years old, starting out on a nice used 600 sportbike is probably the best way to see if he wants to street ride, easy to handle and they have 100+ hp. He can always upgrade later.
Get a 600! And keep your eye on the zx-14, you will know when you are ready for it, may be a month after the 600 or may be 4 years, there's allot of fun to be had on today's 600's. He may want a GSXR-1000 after riding the 600 for a while lol
hope this helps.

Your 100% right Colt.... The ZX14 gen 1 or 2 is not the bike to learn on, way too much power and weight to get a new rider in trouble really quick. The new generation of 600's have more power than the old 1000's, great brakes, light weight and much more "fun" to ride... Talk him out of the 14 as a first bike, and the ZX10... I know a father that bought his kid the R1 for a high school graduation present, needless to say his son is unfortunately no longer with us. Sorry to add that but the street is not like a video game, there are no second chances... BTW, make sure he takes a MSF foundation course. My son wants a bike (his first) he's getting a Ninja 250, with a very loud pipe on it + frame sliders.

Colt:
For your brother:
1. Big brother is NOT a hater, he wants you to learn, have fun and..LIVE.
2. NO ZX14 or and 1000 cc bike is "right" for you. Either could/would kill you because you DON'T know how to control the power and speed they can generate going down any ordinary street in a...blink even if you didn't intend it.
3. Any 600 is a very fast, challenging bike to..learn on. YOU need to learn 1st how to safely control your bike, understand the special hazards you face on a motorcycle riding on the street. (it takes time to understand those hazards and know how to protect yourself from distracted drivers and the reality that most car/truck drivers DON'T see motorcycles or particularly look for them on the road)
4. Sign up for and take your local Motorcycle Safety Foundation course.
5 If you don't have gear already, get a full face helmet (DOT approved of course), armored jacket, gloves, boots and...jeans (several make the kelvar embedded versions) you like and wear this stuff...EVERY TIME YOU RIDE!
You must understand, riding well is not about proving.....anything to others, its about mastering all the skills, knowing...when and...where it is safe to do...whatever and just how dangerous riding on the street is.
Last of all, you are very lucky to have a big brother who cares enough to talk to you about it because dirt bikes are NOT street bikes.
Ride safe and have fun.

Colt,
I was in the same boat as your little brother when i started riding. In mid 2006 i went to a local dealership to get my first bike. I had ridden dirt bikes, quads, three wheelers, etc in the past. But i had never ridden on the street. I walked into my local dealership and started sitting on bikes and checking them out. Of course the first bike that caught my eye was the 2006 Candy Thunder Blue ZX14. I saw the price tag and didn't care. I WANTED that bike! I looked around the dealership and saw all kinds of other bikes and sat on a few. Shortly after that a sales rep approached me and we started talking about options and which bike had what. Once he figured out that this was going to be my first bike he has some very blunt words for me.
He said " If you have your heart set on the ZX14 for your first bike, You will have to go somewhere else to purchase it. I refuse to sell it to you." I immediately responded with "That's bull shit! You sell bikes to people who want them. You have no choice in that matter!" He looked at me like i was a freaking moron and replied, " I am here to sell bikes, If i sell you this bike as a first bike you will never return to purchase another. I will however sell you a different bike that i know you will love and enjoy. If you are careful and obey the rules of the road, You will be back to purchase many more in your life time and fully enjoy them. Bottom line, If you want the ZX14 you can go to another dealership that doesn't care about it customers and only wants to make a buck."
I gave him the benefit of the doubt and we started looking around at other bikes. Then a bike in the corner caught my eye. It was the 2006 ZZR600 in Galaxy Silver. Once i sat on it my mind was made up. If i couldn't have the ZX14 then this was the next best thing. We haggled about price, and went round and round and the next day we came to an agreement and the bike went home with me.
I had put roughly 8,000 miles on the ZZR in just over a year and loved every minute of it. I decide to add some parts in the process. I went with a Dynojet Stage 2 jet kit, D&D slip on pipe, K&N filter, -1 +3 sprockets, Tinted screen, Stereo (which i still have), Grips, under tail, etc.
I was hanging out at a buddy's house on the evening of 10-30-2007, he had a few things to transport to my place. We loaded up a small trailer and he proceeded to follow me home. We made it almost half way when the inevitable happened. I was going 40 in a 45 due to it being dark and i had a follower. I was traveling east on a state road where the north and south bound drivers had to stop, east and west drivers did not. Traveling north a girl who had been driving for 90 days pulls up to the intersection. Failing to check both ways or even stopping completely she pulls out in front of me. I try to avoid hitting her but there was nothing i could do. Just before impact i started to lay the bike down on the left side and it was all she wrote. My right shoulder impacted the drivers side fender of the mini van she was driving. it sent me ass over elbows over the hood of the van. Somehow i managed to land on my feet on the opposite side of the minivan and walk away. By the time i realized what had happened my right knee and my right shoulder felt tingly. The bike was under the front of the minivan and everyone was freaking out. Cops were called and when the cops asked the newbie driver what happened she replied with "I didn't even look, I'm sorry". That one little statement set me perfect in the direction i needed to fight this insurance battle. I walked away with a separated shoulder and a hyper extended knee.
Now in hindsight if i would have been riding the ZX14 that i really wanted at that time i know it would have went different. I would not have known the things i know now. I would have been traveling much faster and i guarantee i would not have gotten as lucky as i did.
Just for shits and giggles here are pics, Before and after pic of the good old ZZR600 i had.

The moral to the story is, don't buy the ZX14 as a first bike. Get some seat time under your belt on the street, then upgrade down the road when your more comfortable with everything.

Little Brother, you are very fortunate to have an older brother that cares enough to warn you of the dangers of a 200HP first bike. My first thought is "are you friggen crazy" but then I remember my youth and sometimes wonder how I survived. Please pay attention to what these guys are telling you or there is a good chance that you will not enjoy a relationship like I have with my older brother and we are in our mid sixties. The ZX14 is no joke and things can get ugly faster than you can imagine. Good luck with getting a new street bike and choose it carefully.

I would say its all on the maturity level of the rider and that he understand this bike, as with any other bike, is to be respected and not taken for granted. I knew a local rider whos first bike was a busa, everyone use to get on his case about getting it as his first bike but from the few times i rode with him and interacted he seemed to know his limitations and had the upmost respect for all that power underneath him.

I say go for the fastest thing out...the ZX14...This is a grown man that rides dirt bikes for crying out loud which can flip you faster(especially two-strokes) than any zx14.
If you had the coin would you drive a twin turbo lambo..or a honda civic? Im pretty sure hwy speed limits are the same for both vehicles....Point is the operator is in control...not the bike..
my2cent Good luck either way!!

But well worth it I learned a lot I prob would have got a busa for my first bike if I could have afforded it I paid cash for my first bike and after all the power that 750 had I was glade I did not start with a big bike got a buddy on his way with a 2011 gsxr 750 going to let him see if he likes it I won't let him ride mine in my eyes he some ready
