What kind of miles are you getting on stock chain?
Just changed the change on my '08 14. The bike has 44,750 miles and there was still plenty of room to adjust it. I've just been doing weekly trips from Spokane to Seattle, and daily trips from Seattle to Olympia, and I didn't want to take any chances. Man I remember back in the day with my 85 zx900a2 I'd be changing the chain in 10,000 miles!
The chain still looked like it could keep going, but it did have a few links not straightening up as they should. I changed both sprockets while I was at it.
This bike is simply perfect for just about any use!! Even after arriving from my 300+ mile trip from Olympia to Spokane I feel I can just keep going to the East Coast!!

Good job taking care of it to get that mileage. You won't see that very often as most don't care for the chain that well.

Thanks. I clean it regularly using Simple Green and then oil it immediately afterward. I'm always trying different chain lubes so I can't say which is best. I normally aim for the cleanest, as in, sticky. As often as I clean/oil it, I'm not too worried about insufficiant lube.

If you got 44,000 miles out of a chain, I'd say your doing something right!

I agree..sounds like your doing it right with that mileage! Your in my neck of the woods too. I travel to Olympia every day from Federal Way myself. Ive got 31K on my chain and clean and lube similar to your schedule.

Haven't tried simple green for cleaning...I usually use kerosene about every 4-5 lubes...it cuts through everything quickly, followed up by 80/90 gear oil. I had almost 30k on the bike when I was rear-ended and I think I made 3-4 adjustments during that time. The gear oil makes a bit of a mess but if you stay on top of it, it's not too bad. Clean up between lubes was usually just wiping the chain down.

I managed 33k miles on the original chain. I used a Scottoiler from new and cleaned it with diesel fuel every month. I changed it because although there was no real signs of wear - no tight spots or stretching, at about 80mph it had developed a whining noise that was getting worse.
