Tony Scott... RIP. Ninja fan.
Director Tony Scott passed away yesterday (Sunday). You can read the details of his death elsewhere. Tony was a bike enthusiast. He used a GPz 750 in the 1986 movie Top Gun. The bike is more commonly known as the Ninja 750 (Japan market model), and was the little brother to the Ninja 900 that Kawasaki released in 1984.
Kawasaki cooperated with Tony and the producers of Top Gun to have the bike in the movie, betting that this (then) unknown director had the right target audience for Kawasaki. "Top Gun" became the top grossing movie in 1986. And the Ninja that Tom Cruise rode is now the grandfather of the mighty ZX14R we ride today!!
Twenty Six years later, I still think of that movie and the Ninja riding down the runway chasing F14s at takeoff. Very cool scene...watch it if you never had the chance.
God Speed Tony, and Thank You for all you did to both entertain us and support motorcyclists.

Sorry to hear about the guy committing suicide, but unless you know something I don't, the bike used on that movie was a Gpz-900r. The 900r was actually the first bike ever marketed as a Ninja. Not to hijack your post, but in my opinion Tom Cruise is one of the most overrated actors.

Sad to hear about Tony Scott, it made headlines here too as he was originally from England.
I always thought the bike Tom Cruise rode on Top Gun was a GPz750, not a 900.

Really? Considering it is your life, I would disagree. Perhaps those who wish a suffering person to continue on...well, they are the selfish ones. Think about it.

The Ninja appearing in "Top Gun" was definitely the 750cc version, not the 908cc version designed for the US market.
