Trickle Charge
Many agree trickle charge is safe with the battery connected, but how safe is it for the zx 14r. Is there a possibility that some of the electronics could get fried?

I used a battery tender JR every winter on my 2007 14. Never had a problem. The original battery was almost 4 years old in the bike when I sold it. Getting another JR for my 2012 for this winter.

+1, have a Jr. had an 07 and used it all the time... Have one on my 12 also.... Great piece of equipment that will keep me from buying one of those 2 LB batteries for 4 years or so... but by then I'll just buy a new bike with a new battery again....

All SLA, Gel, or Wet batteries will sulfate when not being charged.
So having even a small charge going in is advisible.
I use a 15watt panel and a 5A controller. I added a 0-20v meter and a 1A meter so i can 'see' whats going on.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-Watt-Solar-Panel-10W-12V-5A-Solar-Controller-Regulator-Charger-/230763702394?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35ba96a87a
NB: postage But $67 for twice the power (won't overcharge as the controller takes care of that), and with double the avaiable input, it is better for those cloudy overcast as well...
5Watts IMO is a waste of time. That 5w is ONLY when the sun is full face on. Any shade, early mornings, late afternoons is less...
All batteries have what is called an internal resistance. It's normally from around 2-4%.
So a 'tender' of 5 amps at 0.25amps or 250milliamps (sounds better!), is weak.
My advise is to go for at least 10w or 20w and never worry about it.
