New chain required??
well im coming up on 8k miles on my 14R and looks like ill be needing a new rear sprocket soon. When i purchased the bike back in jan I changed out the factory chain and rear sprocket to a Vortex aluminum sprocket and an EK ZZZ530 chain both of which were brand new. I've decided to go with a supersprox rear sprocket and was wondering if i should or need to change out the chain? From what they claim the ZZZ chain is bout one of the strongest longest lasting chains one can get and if i can get some more mileage out of it that would save me a couple of hundred dollars.
Oh and by the way i will be changing the front sprocket when ever i decide to change the rear.

I would replace both sprockets and the chain.. Used chain will wear out new sprockets, Used sprockets will wear out a new chain.

+1, when changing sprockets I always replace the chain also... unless it’s a new bike

I messed around with three different rear sprockets and never changed the chain on my 07 and that had just under 15k on it when it was sold. It probably would be a good idea to change them but it probably is not absolutely necessary. I also noticed that the chain on the 2012 seems to be stronger as I have not had to adjust it yet with over 2k miles. My 07 had streched by then and had been adjusted to take the slack out.

you needs to learn how to maintain a chain if only after 8k miles you need replacement .. i know that sprocket has a steel ring teeth

i lube my chain every three gas fill ups...and no the vortex sprocket thats on the bike now doesnt have any steel teeth the one im looking at getting does.
And i never said i NEED a replacement but im looking at changing it out prob around 10k.

the vortex dont last that long if u ride hard. the chain might be good but would kill new sprocket.

same time i lube. I clean it with the chain brush and spray some sea foam on the brush then wipe it with a rag sprayed with some sea foam

I am OCD about my chain. I had my sprockets and chain for a couple thousand dragstrip miles on my 06 zx14, then put same sprockets and chain on new 14 in 09. They are still on there. Both vortex alum sprockets. 4,500 miles on 14 now with mostly dragstrip miles. They don't look too worn, but I'm going to replace soon. I live and Chilean my chain every trip/ maybe every other trip to the track.

i use diesel to clean with then i hit it with chain wax .. i get around 30k miles out of a chain and sprocket combo ..even with an alumium rear.. rear tires live around 7k miles sometimes longer.. sometimes less

With only 8k miles on that ZZZ chain, I would just install a new rear sprocket since your going back to steel teeth. On steel sprockets you should get up to 20K street miles or more with that ZZZ.

in that statement i was refering to just changing out the sprockets...the question at hand is with this ZZZ chain would it be recommended to also change out the chain even though the rear sprocket is aluminum and ill be switching over to a steal rear sprocket.

sounds like you had you mind made up on using the used chain with the new sprockets, If it was mine it would have new everything at one time.

no not really. I figured since this is one of the strongest longer lasting chains out in the market right now that one might be able to get away with swaping out sprockets with out the chain. I was just curious if anyone out there has had any personal experience with this chain

9k miles on my chain running, currently a 16/40 , rear sprocket is aluminum and I still have room left for adjustments. Been running the aluminum rear for over 3k miles and its in very good condition. That's with I'd say better than 150 drag strip passes. Insert joke here. Maybe not really quick passes but still they count for something.
