Timing retard for using NOS

Who has a good system for retarding the timing when using NOS and about how much timing should be retarded for anything above a 40 shot. Thanks for your help.

I think the easiest setup would be an MSD SB6. I have a few friends using it with a lot of success and that will be the route that I go in the near future.

SB6 is what I use, hook the brown wire to the activation side of a nitrous controller and set it to retard down to 10 degrees on the hit and ramp it up where you want for a set amount of time. works killer.

zx14 EFIR if you have 06-07 works great if you can find 1. how much timing you pull depends on your fuel, c/p ratio, and a lot of other factors, it is best to have it set-up by a pro. the first time for anything over a 40shot.

the SB 6 for timing retard, and a lot of the stuff. $550 the wego three for air fuel, it also has a data logger to show wheelspin, and a lot of other stuff. $400

a new motor $2000 plus labor, for not being able to monitor the stuff.

nitrous has torn up a lot of motors, but not for those people who follow the rules.

Hello Ken, will the Wego III retard the timing, also. I do like the fact that is logs the AFR, wheel spin but if it will do the timing, I am sold. Thanks for the info.

So spend a little now, or double that later... Makes sense. Is it necessary to retard if only running a 30-40 shot?

Seno, I've been waiting a bit for someone more experienced on spray to answer, but I'll give what I've found so far. I've run up to a 40 shot at the drag strip and at the Ohio Mile. I've run this on E85 both places and on 93 octane just at the drag strip. I don't pull timing. This was on good advice from others who have WAY more experience at this stuff than I do. I've been told a 40 shot is good for years, as long as your AFR stays good.

ed, no the wego three will not retard timing. That's why you have to have both of them . Wego three and SB six. The SB six does a lot of stuff. It will retard and advance your timing, any way you want it to happen! I think 5° advance 15° retard. It also has a built-in to step that's adjustable any way you want that to happen. The wego three has a data logger that allows you to see the run afterwards showing you wheelspin, RPMs, and air fuel. There is no need for a tuner. When you have these tools at your hand, if you know what you're looking for.

Basic rules for nitrous, retired 2° for every 50 hp, since the 14 likes about 2° advance . Most people can get away with a 50 shot with no timing taken out. But around 50 hp is where the valve springs start giving up. It's borderline at the track. If you cooled engine down every time, but not on the street. I have no experience with the 14R as far as valve Springs.

To be on the safe side. I would take 6° out for 100 shot, use C12 fuel, C 16 is safer butt hurts power, air fuel should be around 11.9 to 12.1 It's not recommended to use oxygenated fuel and and nitrous.

Hello Ken, Thanks so much for the advice. Sounds like the Wego IIi and the SB6 may be on my Christmas list. Right now i am using Q16 fuel and I am assuming Q16 hurts power like C16 does. Would you know how much power is lost? My bike dynos at 181 horses.

Thanks,

I run a SB6 and take out 3 deg for a 56 shot on my 08
I know q16 loses power off the gas, i would guess and say 4 or 5 % but its alot safer on the gas. It think on the gas it make it up then some.
