2012 14r serial# question
99.5% sure I'm picking up a black 14r monday. We're away on vacation and the dealer emailed me the VIN so I could double check insurance. The last letters before (digits 10 & 11) the numbers are CA. This is in OH but does that indicate a california model?

I don't have time to look this all up but the ca does not have anything to do with a Cal bike.

I don't have the bike yet to look at the owners manual. I really need to know what is added or restricted on the Cali version to decide on my bike.

The California bikes have a passive emissions device to prevent release of gasoline fumes into the atmosphere. An EVAP system. It consists of a charcoal canister, and vacuum controlled valve, various hoses and vacuum lines. The fuel cap and tank are slightly different in that it vents through the evap system not out to atmosphere which adds a tube inside the tank up to the cap and another tube to return the fumes/liquid back to the tank from the evap system. This is all passive and has no affect on the performance of the machine whatsoever.. at least it is like this on my 07. The ECU does have a different part number but I think that is because it has to have California specific controls noted by the manufacture to comply. Removing the EVAP system is a snap and frees up some room and drops a very tiny amount of weight. You can tell if the bike is a California bike several ways. Look for a California emissions compliance sticker near the stem, chain guard, under seat etc. Look for a charcoal canister, was under the seat on the gen 1 zx-14. That is a dead giveaway. More than 1 tube exiting the back of the tank.. mine has 3. Various hoses and vacuum lines, much harder than looking for the canister or a sticker.
If there are any other differences I am unaware.

Thank you very much. I won't see mine till we get back from gloucester. On another zx14 forum rhey have the 2012 service manual and it shows 1 version 25 lbs heavier, sure hope that isn't a Cali version. .

I did click on your link and it does answer the question does "CA" in positions 10 and 11 designate a california model. It doesn't, a date and build location code. I also did as that thread suggests and went to kawasaki.com and put in the serial# it can be either a US or Cali version.
So again, is there anyway for me to tell before looking at the crate monday?
