Thinking of buying one, but very skeptical...

I had myself 100% convinced on buying one. (an 07 with 4500 miles) Then I saw all the problems people have such as spun rod bearings, blown motors, over heating etc.

Now I am very scared to buy one. I chose that 07 because it has such low miles and has been from what I can tell, well looked after. I'd like a bike I can ride for 50k miles or more before really having to start worrying. I'd plan on using full synthetic oil, and a really good engine coolant such as engine ice. I wouldn't be racing, just riding normal and maybe a bit hard from time to time.

Now am I just being really paranoid or are the 06/07 ZX14 known to have a fairly common failrate?

There's no issues that you need to worry about. I have several friends with 06/07 Zx14s and they have zero issues. Keep in mind, blown motors and spun bearings are a hazard when drag racing any vehicle. It happens. For the street, no problems. Buy it and ride it.

I've got over 40k on mine & the only repair was a water pump at around 14k, no problems since. Just do regular service & replace wear items.

If you want a bike to be worry free for 50K you should purchase one new so you how its been broken in, riden, and maintained...

The only trouble you will have is finding enough space to realy ride it, their are cop's , other car's, people , dog's , wild anamals of all kind's, even more of them when your at 100 or so, don't forget gravel!
so why puss arround buy one , you sould own a bike that has as much power as most cars , with hardly any contact patch , you might live to learn a new sport!
so for all of the trolling wonder's 1st gear red line is 80 mile per hour, how much fun is screaming to redline through 2 gears before you could be on your way to jail?? with all those gears left !!

I haven't heard the 06/07 bikes were any more prone to the above mentioned problems than any other year. I believe the spun bearing issue you may have heard about dates all the way back to the ZX11c model or even earlier. All zx14's run warm to hot but that can be easily remedied by adding Muzzy's cooling fan and some water wetter, engine ice or whatever your favorite coolant additive is. The blown motor thing I just have not heard of. Now, I blew the engine in my 09 14 right off the bat but it wasn't a design flaw. It was a mechanic flaw that did something stupid while working on the bike.

I have 06 I bought used. I rode it a little then turned it in to a real street bike back in 08. Been Racing it since with 17 to 20 lbs of boost on stock motor other than base gasket and heavy duty valve springs. Went 8.0's at 185 at Manufacturer Cup Race. Saw 189 mph on one pass. Point is if well maintained these motors will take a beating. Find a clean one with low miles and enjoy it. They are awesome bikes.

spun #3 @ 9930 miles on my 07. Yes, lots of drag passes and a lot of hitting the rev limiter with missed shifts. Pretty steep learning curve for sure. No way to know if it was gonna happen no matter what or not... But it happened nonetheless.

Stupid question. Where did you put the "base gasket" on the 14??? You meant thicker head gasket, right????

I'm really glad to hear about your bike that's why I read your post so thoroughly I guess. I just picked up another ZX14, a turbo one this time. It's got a COMPLETELY stock motor running 8 pounds of boost on e85 making around 290 to the tire. Believe me when I tell you how great it is to hear what you're doing with yours. What fuel do you use if you don't mind me asking? What power? Close to 400 I'll bet. I'm already scheming about changing the head gasket like you did if I can push the power level up by another hundred or so without a complete build on the motor. Sorry to be so nosy but I'm sure you can appreciate my interest in your bike.

I run nothing but VP C16, the bike has never been on a dyno. Chris Jones did all the tuning based on his experience with 14's. So far he has been on the money about everything. Walter Sprout, Chris Jones, Colby Adams, and Barry Henson have all been involved in making this bike continue to live. If you want to know more contact me at jpeck9@gmail.com, thanks for your interest.
