Breaking in period

Has 160 miles on new 14r now. Breaking it in with the occasional burst of revs. I'm going on a 150 mile run this weekend and want to know how should i approach this period. At what revs[speed] and for how long at a time should the bike be travelling at a certain speed or revs.
Thanx

Honestly ride the bike like you normally would. I don't mean bouncing it off the limiter and ringing its neck out but ride it. I have never broke in a bike by the book and never in my 20+ years off street riding have I ever blown up a motor. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough lol.

I agree with all of the above. When I get home from work today, I'll have approximately 60 miles on mine and plan on doing my first oil change. In those miles, I constantly change engine load / rpm and ride enthusiastically but not insane. I've got the revs up to 9k once but usually stick between 6-7k going through the gears. After the fresh oil (Castrol GTX 10w-40 car stuff), I'll be a bit more agressive....and I'm sure by some, I'm being too conservative. I think Smokin said he was running the 1/4 on his new ride before it had 100 miles.

don't tell anyone but mine had 35 miles on it at the first drag strip outing. Did my first oil change before going with Castrol GTX.

Dang Wee - I think you win the award for fewest miles and receiving timeslips! And yeah, the GTX seems to be good stuff - I had a '89 Mustang GT that I used it in from the start - saw a lot of strip duty, had nitrous on it for a while too - pulled the motor apart at 115k miles and still looked like new.

the GTX was just the flush out oil before adding synthetic.

I assembled my first gen 2 busa out of the crate friday afternoon put strap brackets and lowering links on it at the dealer and rode the long way to the track for friday night test and tune, bike had 18 miles on it when I staged for my first pass. made 21 passes that night and rode it home. I know the guy that bought it from me has over 25000 miles on it now and he says it runs great.

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Correct me if Im wrong? I always thought and were told that these engines were tested and broken in before the customer got them.

I was also told to break them in fast to be fast, break them in slow and be slow.

They are tested for RWHP, but not "broken in". My bike has 750 miles on it and 50+ dyno runs in the last 2 months.... Smooth as glass. I personally have used "Motomans guide", http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm but each to their own. I am a big fan of 5 year warranties also, not to mention my local dealer really goes the extra mile to stand behind the products he sells (Long Island Kawasaki).

Thats pretty much exactly how I broke my 14 in, right down to the first oil change mileage and Castrol GTX 10/40 car oil. It worked great for me, my bikes engine is quiet and very very quick. All the bike I need for now
I need to add I only ran the GTX for the first 3000 mile oil change to make sure she was broke in good, then full syn baby!

Honestly, the only zx14s I've ever heard of failing were broke in by the book and failed within a few thousand miles. I think it's very important to get the breakin oil out after a couple hundred miles, and then change again at 1000-1500 miles. All during that time, ride it hard!

I was wondering at what point to switch to synthetic, MJ. I was thinking doing a second change with the gtx at 4 or 500 miles and then doing the synth. at 1,000 miles - but maybe I'll leave it for a while longer.....

Are you saying these bikes come with a special oil to break them in or are you calling the oil that went the first 200 miles break in oil. cause as far as I know there is not a bike that comes with "break in Oil" they come with a standard oil just like you put back in at the first 600 mile oil change.

I would run it for awhile longer, it can't hurt anything, and from my research it might help get a better break in? It seemed to work well for me....and gave me better peace of mind

Google motoman engine break in.

Best done on a dyno or at a track but I broke my busa in right out of the dealership. They had a two mile straight country road right around the corner. The salesmen was stupified. Look on his face was priceless. lol

Can be done in 1-3rd gear under 130 mph. Plan it out, write it down and tape it to your tank. Go for it if there is no po. Stock cand are quiet.

Yeah, I've read the motoman article before - and I definitely sway closer to his way than the owner's manual :-)
