salvage sale Rhino 660 tear down.
Well there were no good bikes just cruisers and ATV stuff at the sale. I spotted a Yamaha Rhino and strolled over to look at the tag to see what is wrong with it and look it over. It is an 07 model 660 with some wore out tires, I checked the suspension and it was pretty tight. The plastic was faded some but all in all it was not beat up. It's also got the gauge package which a lot of the 660's did not have. The tag hanging on the steering wheel said "motor knocks bad" and then "has not been run for a while but battery charged and motor turns over" So I am thinking this is right up my alley. So it started bidding at $500. some older than me guy starts out bidding me everytime I bid, he goes $20 more. To make a long story short I got it for $930 bucks. So I drag it to the house and pull the motor out. It's a single cylinder that sits between the seat but it's heavy hauling out. I put it on my work table and pull the head and cylinder and you can see why it was knocking

The rod bearing is gone. you can see where the 3 intake valves were lightly touching the piston.
A. quick check of the head and valve shows none of the valves are bent. so I got lucky on that. Yamaha and the 5 valve head. R1 inspired power. yeah right

The cyclinder shows no wear. the motor has no sighns that is was using oil. The oil level was full on the stick and it was not new oil. exhaust pipe looks perfect.

So now time to split the cases

There is a lot of little parts in these engines so make sure you lable your parts before assyembly. these motors spilt side to side not bottom to top like a bike engine and it has to come apart with a certain side facing down or all of the parts fall out..
Now that only took a couple of minutes. The new crank has to be pressed in the roller bearing in the crank so I will have to take it to work to install the new crank in the case. It;s a one pice rod and crank thats pressed together this one can be rebuilt. and new rebuilt Hot Rods crank is $250 bucks but I scored a low miles take out for $150 off of Ebay. it will be here soon.

close up of rod and pressed in pin

So I fool with a lot of ATV's and love to go riding and have worked on a lot of them. These motors are pretty tuff and it was really clean on the inside so I only know of one other thing that will kill a Yamaha or KAwasaki ATV and after I pulled the battery and electronic cover I found the killer. the old Ebay extended RPM CDI box. Rhinos are limited to 45MPH but every one wants them to do 65 MPH. the box removes the Rev limit alowwing the engine to turn past its safe limit, plus on 660 and 700 engines holding them wide open pumps the bottom end dry. These boxes are great for more trail power in the right hands. but if that right hand has had to many beers you end up with what I bought.
DYNA extended ECU next to battery

here is a pic waiting the assy. of the motor

again its not 14 stuff but at least it breaks up the winter.
Now to sit back and wait on the crank to get here. It should take no more than 4 hours to assyemble the motor and get it back in and ride it.

It would be cool but would a connie driveshaft motor not be eaiser? how do they make the chain drive work to turn the diffs? and does it keep the 4 wheel drive?

I envy those who will physically tear into something enginewise that they have never played with before with no abandon.
My mechanical skills aren't bad, but much less than yours. I had a horrible experience splitting an engine apart once that left such an impression that I never want to do it again. But I'll tell you one thing, there was a time that I could change the plugs in a Small Block Monza with my eyes closed and have that done in less than 1 hour.
It's good to know tricks and have skills.

I understand. Its like therapy to me. I enjoy tearing into an engine and fixing them. It is very relaxing for me. Plus you can buy broke stuff so much cheaper and after you fix it you know what you got.
