Beware! New Bikejacking Procedure

I'm from South Florida and I just heard about a new way to steal your bike. You're sitting at a light and the thieves run up and grab your helmet and twist it around your head so you can't see then they knock you off the bike and ride away. By time you are able to get the helmet back around if they haven't broken your neck they are long gone. This happened in Broward county more than once. Fortunately one time an undercover cop was in his car right behind the bike and was able to arrest the thieves. Just be aware of anyone walking up to you at a light and be prepared to drive off quickly.

1. If you have a helmet that fits properly they will not be able to turn it on your head.

2. If they grab my helmet they are getting shot.

I like the kill switch idea. Don't think they can turn your helmet? Don't be too sure, they may break your neck in the process but what do they care. If you think you can get to your gun that fast I think you are mistaken unless you ride with no gloves and have the gun in a shoulder holster with your jacket unzipped. These things take milliseconds to happen.

no way my head will turn INSIDE my helmet....if yours does, it is not a proper fit, period.

Keep them scumbags down there in s. florida please. or better yet, shoot them on the spot. Ask questions later...maybe they won't be able to respond.

If your helmet is a good fit, like most here would have, the thief/mugger will only be trying to break your neck. If your sitting at a stop light in traffic and you see them coming you have a chance to react. If you can pull you gun out of it's hiding spot before a fleet footed thief can crack you, you should be in Dodge City. If all else fails, let 'em have the bike.
Last year, an off duty Chicago Police Officer was standing in front of his house showing his brand new ZX14 to his Dad when three bangers walked up and shot him and took the bike. Moral: if somebody wants the bike bad enough, they will get it.
You can buy another bike.
PLEASE be careful brothers!

dont worry about trying to keep them from getting the bike. As fast as the ZX14 is, I promise you, my Desert Eagle .44mag is faster. I will even give them a 3 second head start

Awareness is the key.... If you let someone walk up on you & turn your helmet around you deserve to have your bike taken....

Maybe it's not worth starting a gunfight, what do I know, we don't carry arms in England - but there's something better. Let the scumbags have the bike and then my Tracker security device will lead the cops straight to their front door. That way you get your bike back and the police get their man. Result.

Do you have anything like Tracker in the USA?

Yes we do. It has been around for years but relies on the cops and their departments to use it which doesn't always work out so well as they don't seem to care too much.

If someone grabs your helmet and twists its your going wherever they chose. Where the head goes the body follows. Best thing would be to have a tether kill switch so it can't be driven off..

In this day in technogies, I wwish there was a remote control to be tapped into the kil switch, & that remote could work say for 1/8 mile or so , if they force you off the bike, hit the remote which is hanging on your belt loop & bike all of a sudden stops...

No reason why that can't be done. It's a feature of the Find iPhone App where you use GPS to locate your phone and can also remotely lock it so it can't be used. Maybe a safety issue would prevent it's use on a bike, except by the police - but like the Tracker, they would have to get their finger out and be bothered to use it.

I was just looking up GPS tracking devices and haven't read about all of them but there are some pretty cool options. I wouldn't be surprised to find a shut down option on one of them. I did see a tv program where the cops made a car theft sting and then were able to shut down the engine and lock the doors on the sting car.

Sounds like a rare case in a bad isolated area . Most inner city bike thefts happen in parking buildings or lots while owner is away from bike.
