Knecum's new shop, new 14-R engine

Stopped this morning at my friend Steve Knecum's new race shop. Still setting up but way bigger than his former one-car garage. We brought a new ZX14-R engine just removed from a 0 mile bike. Popped the pan and head and took a look. Super strong, you guys that add a pipe and tune will be able to beat on this one forever. Big HP, not so easy; a quick look shows little chance of more stroke but never say never until the cases are split. Factory deck is .010 (.030 HG) on this one and cams set about at max. power.

Steve's shop looks great! And so does the 14R engine, for the average street/track racer!

So far from what ive seen i think the Competition CNC 47mm throttle bodies will work on the 2012 as well. We will have more data soon.

Rod clearance is still an issue on these engines. They did what they had to do to get the 4mm in there but they didnt give us anymore all around clearance.
The rod bolt to clutch basket is still the main issue.

No the crankcase and cylinders are one piece....not like the zx12r and busa. No one that im aware of makes anything for the zx14.

We started to develop a special wet sleeve/deck system with Steve Dimerjian and realized that 87-88 mm bore would be the limit without a ton of welding and other issues. That wasnt enough bore to justify the $2500+ it was going to cost to do each of the new decks and cylinders even thou it would allow us to raise the deck and have straighter stronger cylinders of 87-88mm bore.
We can do 87 mm now and havent had head gasket issues so far.
So we put all that on the back burner 3 years ago. I just didnt think there would be enough customers that would want to spend that kind of money.

Yea, congrats Steve...... nice place!!! Sorry I didn't mean to highjack your thread, was just answering questions....

Steve, now the fun begins.... overhead cost !!! just wait until you get employees, it gets even better when they stick their hand in the valve grinding machine and get bloody.... we had that one this week... oh the joys.

OK to clarify you can simply bore and hone the existing cylinders and put in 87 or 88mm pistons..?

So any more stroke would be tough to get, as well.as going larger then 87 mm on bore.

But why not big cams and a better head with big valves? Anyone ever thought about fly cutting pistons?
