My first 60 miles on the new ZX14R
Got the bike today at 6:00 and started the mods .. Lowered the back with some left over Roaring Toyz 3 hole links .. Drop the forks a full inch in the trees.. I left everything else as factory ..
I put about 60 miles on it tonight .. First thing i noticed was the ride , it is a bit stiffer than the Gen 1s and it was needed upgrade ... I love the dash , i can now read the speedo and tach .. This is a big plus for me to see how fast i'm going .. Jury is out on the seat at this time , not sure i like it or hate it at this point .. The bike seems to handle better than the Gen 1s , it seems to be more sure footed .. Brakes , well what can i say , they are as allways great on a zx14 ..Maybe it's just me but the motor seems smoother than the Gen 1s engines .. could be because it brand new .. Fit and finish is much better than the Gen 1s .. I had no real problems taking the bike apart for the mods, everything came apart very easy .. I have to tell you the factory exhaust are some heavy turds ..Much heavier than i would have guessed ... Pulled one off and damn near dropped the damn thing on my foot thinking it could not be that heavy.. Good thing is you remove them the same way as the old pipes or no guess work .. I did notice when you fire the bike up the TC set its self to the number one setting so you have to turn it off before riding .. If you take off in number one TC you can NOT turn it off while riding .. You can turn it up to 2 or 3 while riding but out can't turn it off ... You can switch power modes while driving .. Good thing i guess .. You can really tell Kawi did there homework on this bike .. The drain plug is very nice , no way at my weight i'm i going to hit it on anything .. You can slam this bike much more than the Gen 1... The trans is butter smooth , better than the Gen 1s ..Not near as clunky but that never bugged me anyway ..
Now lets talk about the power ...Keep in mind i had about 40 miles on it when i hit it from a roll in second gear .. It pulled hard right to the limiter , and i did run it to the limiter and that kind of shocked me .. I didn't have any good place to really ring its neck so i didn't get to try it again ... I'm not sure but i feel it would be a very close race with my 2009 ZX14 .. Keep in mind my 09 was piped, tunned , geared with the flys out ...It was after all an 8 second bike .. I have to tell you i feel this bike will make around 180 to 185 HP as is , not sure of this 190 HP stuff we keep hearing about .. I could be the 41 pounds of exhaust it has to carry around that makes it feel like 180 and not 190 .. .Then it could also be it just needs some break in time to make full HP .... 60 miles and only one wide open throttle test didn't really give me a good feel for the bike ..You can feel the extra low end TQ even with the flys in place ..For me the flys have to go just like the 06 to 07s .. There is so much more in this bike it's not even funny .. I can feel it holding back just like the 06 and 07s did.. Good part is the power doesn't nose dive at 9500 , it never stops pulling till you bang the limiter ..
Add a 16 tooth , dump the dog rocket exhaust , toss the flys like a frisbee and you will have a bike that nothing but a big built motor bike could touch .. I understand why Kawi made this bike this way and that was to keep you from killing yourself .. This bike uncapped would just be to much for the avg joe ... This bike Brocked out setting at 64 inches is going to run two tenths quicker than the gen 1 ...

Gee i allmost forgot .. This was a biggy for me ... My 06 and 09 allways cooked my legs .. This new zx14 doesn't have that problem .. Sure wil be nice in the summer to ride this bike .. Many days i would not even think about riding my Gen 1s because of the frigging heat on my legs .. I think you guys will be very happy about that ..

How lean do you think it runs without a PC?
I drove 1500 miles without a PC..........you think that was bad for the bike or was I just not getting max power?

From what i understand the CT and the TI sidewinder are good for this bike and need no upgrading .. It's the Smeg and alien head that will be upgraded ..

A lot of people did just what you did and had no problems ..The P/C and tune just added more power .. Wee has his out and his data log looked ok .. Maybe not the best tune but doesn't look to cause any problems driving it that way ..

you like the digital temp gauge,I like seeing numbers not bars, look at your shock, mine is cranked all the way down from the factory making a firmer ride, if you don't like the seat the Gen 1 will fit, not sure about the Gen 1 seat cowl.

I do like the temp gauge over the old bar set up .. Not that i ever worried about it running hot anyway .. Now with 2 fans maybe people will shut up about the bike running hot that was never really that hot ..

what about the shifter, does it move less to shift than Gen 1? maybe it's just me since it's been 7 months since I was on a 14 and was riding a GSXR-1000.

It did feel smoother and maybe a bit shorter movement .. Like you I have been off a zx14 for sometime but something feels a little different ..

All good news...
Lee:
Glad to hear your meds are working well enough so you got out on the new scooter. All the early feedback from you and Wheelie, has me completely...jealous, but soon enough I will have mine next year. I really think....you could go to go 8's with a 40 tooth and those huge stock cans on the 14R set up like you like it. It will be interesting to hear what you find when you dyno yours. Blue is...badass.
Do what you do and heal up bro.

I gotta stop reading these threads, I'm starting to get that itch. I hear crap like the Gen 2 motor is smoother then Gen 1 and I think to myself "How can that be?". I never thought the 14 heating of the rider was a big issue but owning the ZX-11 in Florida it's a pretty hard to compare, I thought the old 14 was far cooler....although still warm I never felt as though I was going to pass out. Next thing I'll find out is the Gen 2 motor will pull 40+ MPG....Remember nerdboy likes better gas mileage, I love a touring machine that doesn't weigh 5 times my weight.
Daytona is still several months away and working as a contractor is going to keep that bike just out of reach for a little while, but who knows what the future holds.
Sweet write up Smokin take care of yourself, Lord knows I really understand that there are times you shouldn't ride but you ride anyway. Bikers will be bikers.
