Wossner pistons

The JE pistons I had used on the first build had cracks in wrist pin bosses and around the skirt. I started checking into getting another set of stroker pistons. First I called JE and asked them for their opinion on what caused the cracks to make sure that would not be an issue in the future. I emailed them some pics and they said that they had no clue... maybe I was using too much nitrous? they also had no engineering on the pistons they had made for Muzzy, even though there is a job number on the piston. But for $850 they could make a custom set. Since they could not explain the cracks , I wasn't feeling too good about getting more of the same .

I did talk to Wiseco , but they want to make a minimum of 20 pistons .

Wossner was great about making a custom set for around $650. Their original drawing had the top ring 1 mm lower than the JE had. Since there was no evidence of problems with the ring location , they thought that it would be safe with more nitrous... I wanted the ring further down and they had no problem redoing the drawing and using a rail support for the oil ring ... Now this was looking more like my race car stuff :-)

Wossner did a great job at answering technical questions and getting the part made. I am hoping to use the same design to build a 5 mm stroker for the gen 2 motor.

1627 cc with a +5mm and +2mm bore .... now thats gonna make 1650 cc class a little more competitive.

Roy, I dont think you will be able to stroke the engine +5mm when its already +4mm.

The clutch basket is already machined down in that area for rod bolt clearance.

We will know for sure soon.

Wossner rods and pistons are nice stuff.

shit ... more custom work ... maybe a smaller pin size for the crank, and aftermarket rods ?

I was working with John Noonan earlier this year on the Wossner rods for the zx14. I made some changes to the engineering drawings for clearance and they were moving along on the project.
I haven't talked to John in a while now, so I'm not sure where there at.

Roy, on the carrillo's with a 4 or 5 mm stroke crank you need to grind quite a bit off of the head of the #4 bolt to clear the clutch basket. And that was with a 66 mm stroke.

Just a guess here .. but with the stock rod setup I would think that even more clearance was needed because of the nut on the rod bolt.... so maybe they used a smaller clutch basket or the moved the clutch back by 2 mm?

And if the stock type rods clear I bet I can still get a 5 mm stroker in there

Here's 2 pics of the basket.

They machined a grove in it to clear the rod bolt. I highly doubt they changed the center-line locations of the crank and input shaft. But i suppose its possible.
