Gearing on the new 14

primary drive is1.556 , up from 1.541 - this will take away 2 mph from top speed runs

final drive is 17/42 , so up one tooth on the back - this takes away 4 mph on top speed runs

first gear is changed to 47/18 from 42/16 -- this puts first gear back to where the old bike was ... maybe to calm down the launches a bit

so top speed is 185.1 at 10,600 vs the 191.5 the old bike was geared for....

4th gear runs out at 144 mph vs the 149 mph of the old bike

Dude there's no possible way you can know that. Don't even try it. Once again another assumption by someone who haven't even sat on the 2012 zx-14, more or less know's what the hell it's going to do.

So it's geared shorter to be quicker in the 1/4 along with it's extra torque.

Seems the Busa will retain the "Fastest Bike in the World" claim.

"Phenomenon"? What phenomenon?

I think that what this will do is allow riders that aren't jockey sized to do better at the strip.

with the first gen 14 vs a busa, it really depended on the rider and skills to win a race.

with more aggressive gearing and more torque,, a non-jockey sized rider may have a better chance....

but a lightweight rider at stock wheelbase might not like the wheelies in 3rd or 4th gear ... and maybe run slower

good news for the fat boys .....

Thanks Roy for posting that gearing info..............I know your calculations are spot on but in the real world do you really think the top speed of a stock Zx 14R will be slower than a stock Gen 1 Zx 14?.................I seem to remember stock Zx 14's couldnt pull their gearing and needed to be geared a little bit (16 tooth or + 2 on the rear) to reach max top speed.........seems like they figured the limiter kicks in at 186 so they gave us the gearing for better 1/4's but still hit 186 top speed?

it will be slower at Maxton ( or what ever the new land speed venue is) Stock motored bikes have run 199-205mph

it will take an 18 tooth front sprocket to go as fast as the stock motored gen 1 zx-14 bikes.

but then again , how many people actually race on the street to 200+ mph ? I only know a few ....

I am sure most riders will never know how fast their bike really goes :-)

I think the new bike will make quite an impression , even with average riders on them.

this post had little to do with gear changes .... but if you took you stock zx-14 to the track or did a roll on down the highway , this is what you can expect.

But it does appear that kawasaki has taken a different approach this time around. The bike will pull all the way to redline in 6th gear... no speed limiter to slow you down in the middle of 6th.... the 186 mph limit is accomplished with gearing and a rev limit.

makes one wonder if the only limiter on the bike is the rev limiter ? now that would be cool.

I had always wondered if 6th gear on the old bike was not meant to pull , since it would be up against the speed limiter in the middle of 6th.

Does anyone know if the 2012 model rev limits where the gen 1's do? I saw in the vs busa vid the tach going past 11.5 a few times and I know its off becuase mine gets close to 12, but I would think that with the better cams, it should be allowed to spin higher? Surely the rev limiter isn't still just 11k?

longer stroke = higher piston speeds

typically that would mean lower redline.... but Kawasaki went to a forged piston , so they may be willing to keep the redline the same

the calculations I did were bases on the same 10,600 redline ( actual , not indicated)

Plus most riders who really want more acceleration change gearing anyway. I think the new gearing will be more for mag reviews to give better performance. Once they get into owners hands gearing and exhaust are the first changes average modders make
