Damn well Nuts!

I know this one has been beat like a dead horse but I just have to mention again what a shitty design those well nuts are that mount the grills! I installed a BMC filter tonight and of course I tried to re-use the well nut and I pushed it right into the air box. Had to lift the tank and dig it out. Just a piss poor design all in the name of saving a couple cents.

Two bikes and never had a problem with mine .. Jesse bike has been apart a half a zillon times and never had one go bad .. I have had two other zx14 in my shop that we did have to replace them .. The cause of the well nuts going bad is over tighting them ..

I think the well nut idea is great. The problem is that some of us can't seem to believe they will stay in with just a little tension. You go and tighten them up and they will break.

The only screws that ever come loose on my bike are the NON well nut screws. The well nuts stay where you put them. Thread i until they start to squeeze the rubber then go another turn and a half. Plenty. never busted a nut since I started trusting them.

Suzuki makes their well nut fasteners with a shoulder so you can't overtighten. You bottom the shoulder and that is all the tension necessary for the rubber to hold the screw in place. If you want to tighten the shoulder against the surface it butts up to you can do it but the rubber won't be getting squashed if yo do.

that may be some of it .. but i don't agree . along with that #2 grounding terminal being a problem .. and the cam chain tensioners rattling .. and along with #3 rods letting go.. that ain't all owners faults .. but i sure you'll tell me mopar paint is great too.. and the ram truck dashes don't crack either .. and the ram trucks didn't have a steering problem ..

Cheap parts

They build things cheaply, but they kicked our ass at Pearl Harbor.

'Build a very strong engine....wish all the other parts throughout the bike were as well made. That way they stay employed over there making new parts, so when we break them....they sell us more.....they have been screwing us since Dec. 7, 1941...what else is new!

Yes, they can come apart and the metal part get sucked into your motor. Don't overtighten them. The 14R has the same setup.

The ones on the side of the frame, where the bolt attaches the grills. There are two of them, one each side.

My well nut failed and I lost my mid fairing at 194mph during a run at Texas mile. Never knew until I was told by someone that "something black flew off your bike"

For once the video camera was facing back and caught it coming off. Happens so quick!

Sounds like you might have had a problem with more than one fastener!
