Tire size question
After blowing my motor last summer, I'm finally getting very close to being up and running again.
I've been running the Shinko U-Soft for a couple seasons now - need to replace and looking at the Hookup. I'm looking for some input on negatives/positives of the various sizes available (currently listed as 180/55, 190/50 and 200/50)
The 180 would appear to have highest probabilty of laying flat and therby getting the best traction to launch with - wondering how the top speed would be affected though?
Conversely, the 200 would probably give the best top end but at a sacrifice of traction off the line.
Does this mean taking the 190, air it down, and accepting that it will only be consistantly average in both aspects? Just wondering out loud

I think you have all of that backwards

Please elaborate
My thought process was that the 200, having a larger circumference than the 180, would make the tire have a more pronounced "round" profile - this smaller contact patch would have less rolling resistance, therefore a higher top speed. Conversley the smaller circumference of the 180 would let it sit flatter for grip, but the extra contact patch would rob high speed
What have I misunderstood?

with 12 pounds of air in both the 180 and 200, do a burnout and see which black mark is wider, 200 weighs more than a 180 and will have more rubber on the ground "drag" for top speed

I have tested all of those tires with regards to contact patch. In 2007 we (Jones Performance Cycles/ Shinko sponsored) tried a 180 u-soft on a stock zx14 rim and it actually had nearly a 1/2 smaller contact patch than that of the 190. However, it still hooked well on a bike with a good supension set-up at 64 inch wheelbase. The 200 won't offer you any better contact patch with a stock width wheel either, it will simply roll over slightly on the sides and pretty much be the same as a 190 once it is mounted. On the turbo bikes (real-street/super-street) we would run from 8-10 psi using a u-soft without any spinning issues. With the Hook-ups we are as high as 15-17 psi on the same style bikes. As far as top-end speed, that directly relates to rolling resistance. The more air you put in a tire, the easier it roll. The same is true for a smaller contact patch. But there comes a point where you are trying to split hairs v/s what is pracrtical for drag racing. Put a 190 hook up on your bike and run around 15 psi and you will be fine. Depending on your wheelbase, horespower and supension set-up you can probably increase the psi of the substancially without a spinning issue is your track is prepped decently. Hope this helps you out, Chris Jones.

The 190 hook-up has done well for me in the past. I'm going to try a 180 hook-up at the track tommrow. Just tring to find the limits of my set-up. I hope it hooks...

I understand the 190 has the best contact patch. However, the lighter 180 hook-up is working well for me so that is my chioce for now.
