need help on swb wheelies issues
Im 245 have the bike geared 16/40 lowered 1.5in in the front and have the rear lowered 2in. I have a revalved shock and straight link from when it was 12 over. Ive played with having the strap fully tight,1/2 and 3/4. None seem to help. Once the bike reaches 8k the front wheel is on its way up. Ive adjusted my rear shock. I dont know what else i could do. Maybe lower it some more in the front maybe. This is new to me racing swb. I cant get to full throttle without looking in the stands or stars. Anybody have any advice

I have a very similar set up as you do but I weigh in at 50 lbs less and I'm running the stock shock (195lbs in street clothes) and I know what you are going through. I have to "roll" on the throttle to keep the front end down in first too. If I'm at WOT in first gear below 7K rpm, when the rev's climb, so does the front end. My trick is to try not to go WOT until about 8.5K rpm. It's gotten my 60' times down to a not so impressive 1.63 but that's not terrible either.
The heavier we are as a rider, the more difficult it is to keep that front end down.

Are you sliding back in the seat?
That can make a big difference, but the zx14 is a hand full for anybody at SWB.

16/40 is a lot of gear for swb. Many guys run 17/40.

i'm around the same weight and running 16-41, have pretty much the same problem. i average 1.63 60' times. my best is 1.60. I'm going to go back to 17-41. I spoke with Brock sometime back at Rockingham, and he says it'll still carry my weight and pick up with that or 17-40. so I'm gonna try it next trip to the track.
just thought it may help you too if you got extra sprockets layin around

Like Shane mentioned go with 17/40 or the stock 17/41.......
Sounds like you have set the bike up already with everything you can. You could add some ballast up front. Truth be told you're gonna have to slide that clutch a just a hair longer to get that thing moving without lifting the wheel too high and too fast.

i think i found out the problem. I had the coil in the front forks tight. Ive had it this way for yrs. The bike would rebound hard everytime even bounce with the strap on it. I turned the adjustment fully. So its soft and guess what. The bike stays on the ground. Ive tried it a few times on the street but going to the track tommorrow. I never thought about cking that.

If you have the strap pulled down snug in the front that shouldn't matter.
If the strap didnt help on the wheelies, I don't know what to tell you.
I did my best 60fts at swb with stock gearing. I tried 16t front and it wheelied too easy

let's look at the physics of what is going on.
Your rear axle is the pivot point of the wheelie...as the bike squats the CG lowers. If you are 245, that is a lot of weight that is way above the CG and all it wants to do is rotate back up and over the pivot point.
You need to be as far forward as possible (as in your helmet should be nudging the windscreen), your rear suspension needs to squat and stay there...front end should be strapped tight.
Your gearing also needs to go back to the 17 front. Adjust with the rear sprocket if needed by going up a tooth at a time.
I ran 17/40 on mine and wheelies were never an issue for me. BUT, you riding style will vary that big time.

Yep...If I were you, i'd have 17-41 during the cold & put a 42 on in the heat & put the Brocks .180 spacers on the clutch springs...

Tighten the compression on the shock up. Soft = wheelies hard = spinning. You want to find that happy medium.
You may also try either lowering the front or raising the rear. Changes the suspension geometry.
Ballast is another idea.
I've cut 1.54 on my swb setup, but i have an ohlins shock and some other tricks. That was 16/43. I'm actually going back to stock gearing to see if anything changes.
But, i'm also 160 lbs.. lol

thank u fellas i will try all of what ive been told. I tried the 16/40 i was running and the bike didnt come up. I went to 16/41 and its coming up at the top of first. So back to 16/40 i go. Adjusting the front actually did alot. It made the front of the bike heavy. Im going to adjust the rear and see what else happens. Thank fellas

I had a similar problem with the front bouncing when it was strapped down all the way. It's because the only suspension you have left is the tire. I dropped the clamps down the fork legs a little and strapped it to the same height as before, this left a bit of suspension movement and most importantly, some damping. Problem solved.
The other comments about rolling the throttle open are spot on, you won't get WOT in first gear on a short wheelbase, unless you have a sick motor. Having more power than you can use is better than not enough. Like the others I found 17/40 was the best for stock wheelbase.

l
soft does not = wheelies....hard will. If the bike cannot squat all that energy just wants to rotate around the axle (wheelie) The more weight you can get down in front of the pivot instead of over it...the better. If your shock is rebounding too fast with soft compression, it will spin when it unloads...sloooooow rebound is the key.
I will agree that if compression is too hard, it will spin much easier.

Some wise words above.
Also worth adding is that wheelying is provoked by the front end unloading which is why we strap it down.

Bob i was WOT in first gear at the 60 foot mark at stock wheelbase .. it's not easy but it's 100% doable..

Ok, TOO soft will make it wheelie. You bottom out the shock and theres no where else for it to go but up.
But what do i know.
