Pressure testing the Airbox- Turbo related
I had a boost leak on my bike when i took it in for tuning. I made up a rubber plug with a air connection and regulator to check the airbox.
Put it in the incoming turbo tube to airbox
Found a good leak at the second hole on the back of the steering stem.
My question is now that leak is fixed, how much pressure should the airbox hold?
The throttle bodies are not air tight so pressure goes into the combustion chambers and past any open valves.

I bet you could seal it to test it. Perhaps some aluminum duct tape sealing the velocity stack area. Especially if you remove the stacks, that should be easy.
But, aside from that, these boxes can hold at least 20 psi...if properly sealed...just based on the fact that LeonidasZX14 has run about that on his Jones Performance bike.
What kind of stacks are you using, and how is the box sealed? What kit? One thing with the 14 that seems nice is that with good stacks, and frame sealing, you wouldn't have the problem of lifting the plenum under high boost like you can on other bikes.

I can get almost 7psi on the boost gauge before i get what sounds like air coming out the exhaust.
I using stock stacks and there doesnt seem to be any air coming from there.
I just had them out yesterday and they fit tight as can be.

I am not sure how much it will hold with stock stacks. I can tell you that the Factory Pro stacks seal much better than the oem, even for an NA app.
Can you block off the exhaust??

theres the hole on the bottom by the neck that you plugged in your test .. but also theres a hole going into the neck that will leak pass the steering bearings.. when you got the stock air filter cover open you can see it hiding behind bracing .. that stock airfilter cover even when replaced to a billet oring type is a bitch to seal even with silcone

Got both sealed, the bottom one with screw in it wasn't leaking, the upper one was, sealed it no more air through the stem.
But still not sure if box is sealed cause air gets past the throttle plates.

crank case vent (but there is a bolt in this tube in the battery box) and the others the drain on the foot shifter side .. i did like shane said but i stuffed rags into the throttle bodies them taped it .. then soaped the airbox ..to my amazement them stock volecity stacks held to 15lbs ..and when they did leak it was from the rubber to frame meeting joint ..
i only run 8 lbs of boost tho

Yep those had sealed from the beginning. As far as the stacks go, i'm only looking to see maybe 10 psi max, more likely around 8.5psi.
I think the airbox itself is sealed up now, just want to make sure there isn't anything i over looked before putting this bike back together.

Nope, don't know how much time i will get for Byron this year, i have to get my bike dialed in first and then see what class i'll fit in.
Was thinking 8.90 if i turn my shift points down a little.

im going to run the 8.90 shifting early and only running 10 t0 12 lbs of boost on the controler feeding it slowly wish they would do the 8.50 class they were talking about to many bikes in the class makes it harder for the faster bikes to mutch sandbagging

Bigwii: I was not aware those factory pro had sealing problems. It makes me curious about your Turbo stage 3 set up. Would like to know more if you don't mind sharing.

Probably the same things as me
What turbo kit or parts combination??
engine management?
engine mods ??
how is it working for you, what do you like or dislike about it
Maybe i should start a thread asking the same things of other turbo guys
I have the Cycle concept part kit from Shane and intend taking it a bit further than the original design
Planning gt3071 turbo, external wastegate, Would love to intercool it but its not real intercooler friendly, may just water inj
Thinking i may have to Sandwich plate the main airbox holes for high boost
I have an Aem Fic piggyback , they can be troubled by "electrical noise" on the busa, may be better on the zx .
Looking at pistons, rods, oil mods, studs, have some .070 gaskets coming, clutch springs
Have i missed anything that NEEDS doing ?
Nice tips on the velocity stacks

Well the leak is fixed and BOV works good!! Problem is now i took it for a ride down the freeway(short bursts) and saw 10 psi on the gauge,do i leave it,or take a few shims out of the waste gate? Was hoping to keep it under 9 psi.

Ok, another question for those of you running a boost controller, where do you have it mounted? I have a ams-500 . Thanks...Stu.
